Email From a Relative Newcomer
I received this in the email the other day
from Chris C and thought I would share it for any riders out there who
were wondering if there is much benefit to be had from joining a cycling
club.
From: Chris C
Subject: HALF A CENTURY
26/12/2001
I was just looking through
my diary. I joined the Addiscombe in November 2000. I remember Richard C.
asking me at about that time whether I was interested in racing. I said I
wasn't sure. I enjoyed the club runs. That would probably be enough for
me. Maybe I would do a few 10s.
Since then I have done
exactly 50 races, 46 of them in 2001. The 50 races comprise 11
cyclo-cross, 17 time trials (at distances from 10 miles to 218 miles), 14
road races (counting the Easter Three Day as three races), and 8 roller
races. You might want to warn members who have recently joined that racing
is seriously addictive.
I've really enjoyed my
first year of club cycling, and would not have had the nerve to race at
all without lots of well-judged encouragement and advice from the more
experienced riders in the club. You and Paul were the first to encourage
me to race, in the cyclo-cross at Guildford. I am very grateful to you
both.
Have a Happy New Year
Chris
PS Paul, of course, went on
to "encourage" me to all kinds of madness, culminating in the
tandem race, which was the scariest of all, and the most satisfying - but
that's another story.
