Brighton Marina triathlon 21-09-14

I'd got a bit bored of time trials, so around May this year I decided to have a bash at triathlon.

First one I entered was Bewl Water at the end of July, but had to DNS because I got tendonitis in my right ankle a week beforehand, and could hardly walk let alone run.

So Plan B was the Brighton Marina triathlon. Not quite an olympic distance at 1k swim, 32k bike and 8k run. I set myself a target of 2hrs 15min, comprising 20 minutes for the swim, 1hr 10min for the bike (very hilly), 40mins for the run (flat), and 5 minutes for faffing in the transitions.

An early start of 7.15 meant getting out of bed at 4.15  . Slight panic on the way down when the overhead signs on the M23 were saying the A23 was closed, but as I got to the A23 roadworks the hi-viz chaps were just un-coning the road to reopen it. Phew!

Quite a low-key event, with no HQ as such, the transition area was in Asda's car park, and McDonald's staff were probably quite surprised at the number of people in lycra and wetsuits using their toilet at 7am on a Sunday morning.

I was in the 2nd wave (of 2) to start, which was women and vets. I let the initial frenzy of the swim start space out a bit so I could swim at my own pace without the risk of getting kicked in the face. Probably lost a bit of time because of that.

Got through 1st transition OK, and was soon catching and passing people on the bike leg, which was basically two laps consisting of a climb up to Woodingdean then a fast 40mph+ downhill. Made up a whole load of places there, a mixture of faster swimmers from my wave and slower people in the first wave.

On to the run, which was a bit of an unknown, as my previous running training has been mainly 5k parkruns. A few people passed me, but not many. Quite a gathering at the finish line to cheers people as they finished, which was nice.

Result 2:06:34, for 47th place out of 107, and 9th vet out of 26. Reasonably pleased with that for a first attempt.
