Marshalls for Crystal Palace Crits - Tuesday 30th July

Postby Bridget » Sun May 19, 2013 9:14 am

Hi all,

We need to provide marshalls for Crystal Palace on Tuesday 30th July. The series is organised by Dulwich Paragon, so all we need to do is turn up to marshall, and cheer on some of our clubmates in an evening of exciting crit racing. Sunny evening guaranteed (really, these don't run if it rains), convenient to London, and if people fancy we can go for some beers after :D

- no of marshalls needed: 10
- time needed: arrive between 6pm and 6:30pm, be in place for 6:30pm start
- place: Crystal Palace park, meet at "DP Liaison" on the map http://www.dulwichparagon.com/tempdocs/palace.jpg
- equipment: All provided

There are Youth, E/1/2, 3/4th and women's races - anyone who's entering, note you need to enter online early as the first couple of races have been completely sold out.

Thanks,
Bridget

Thanks - was it you (Ant Leeson) who said you would yesterday? I don't know why I've got such a rubbish memory! Doesn't bode well for forthcoming exams

Maybe just a word on what Marshalling at Palace is about.

It's a closed circuit in the park so there are no cars. There are, however, joggers, walkers, casual cyclists, skateboarders etc. who need to be kept off the track. The seniors go round at a very fast pace, the sightlines for the riders aren't good in places so the track needs to be kept clear of dozy members of the public.

Mostly it involves standing in a park on a summer's evening. If there's rain then it will be cancelled.

Bridget: do you want me to bring a long measuring tape and chalk so I (or someone) can do youth gear checking?

As far as I've been told, our duties are only to marshall - as you say, to keep other park-users off the track during the race.

I asked what was needed and was told the info in the bullet points. I assume all the other race duties will be done by DP.

Did you gather something different from other races there this year?

The only one that's happened so far they didn't have anyone to do gear checking. If it's not our problem then fine. I have the knowledge and the stuff though if it's required.

Having no gear checking wouldn't bother me but I spent ages with Sheldon Brown's gear calculator, looking up available cassettes, sending Mrs. H. to Corridori and even did a rollout test to make sure I'd actually got Tom's top gear to 0.05m from the limit :)

thanks Mark, thanks Jessica.

Phil - I would suggest that by 30th July the youths will have been riding on their current gear set-ups all season. If you're concerned I suggest you raise it with the race organisers on Tom's next race. Never having paid much attention at youth races, I'm interested, do they usually check the gears then?
