Road Racing
The whirring of wheels, the noise of
a hundred chains on sprockets, the smell of embrocation as the bunch whizzes
past and the flashes of coloured jerseys. Just a few of the sights, sounds and
smells of road racing that you can experience.
As arguably the most
glamorous sport under the umbrella of cycling most people have some
idea what a road race is all about from watching the Tour
de France on television. Whilst Le Tour is the epitome of bike racing there
are hundreds of thousands of other road races going on all over the world that
you can get involved in.
Once you have joined a club and
affiliated to a racing organisation you can pop over to France, Belgium or
anywhere else you fancy and battle with riders of your own standard. Whilst Britain
doesn't have such a rich racing heritage as somewhere like France we are still
spoilt for choice. In Addiscombe's own backyard we have closed circuit road
races in Crystal Palace Park, Kent League races every weekend, Eastway Circuit
races every weekend and Surrey League
races 3 times a week.
If road racing is your thing then
Addiscombe is the club to join. Whilst we aren't the fastest couriers in
the bunch we go out of our way to be amongst the friendliest and the ones that
want to show you the ropes. After all you may be the next Lance Armstrong and we
would like you to be wearing an Addiscombe jersey when you cross that finish
line with your arms held aloft...
If you are interested in Road Racing
do the following
1, Come on a club run with us on a
Saturday morning down to the cafe. We often get 60 or so people out so even
though it is slow you will get the exhilaration of riding in a bunch.
2, Join a club. Preferably
Addiscombe but definitely a club with people you can have a laugh with.
3, Get the magazine Cycling Weekly
for road racing features.
4, Get the free satellite channel Eurosport
to see how the professionals do it.
5, Watch some cycling videos when
the weather is bad. Try "American Flyers", "A Sunday in
Hell" and "Breaking Away"
6, Practice riding fast!

If you look carefully you can see Paul Tunnell and
Chris Colford in the middle of the bunch just seconds before they launch a
massive victorious attack. (Paul - are you sure about this?!)
