Evening 10 Mile Time Trial 1st May
2001
Addiscombe endeavour to put on as many
events for beginners as possible. One of these events is a 10 mile time
trial held one evening after work down at Dorking. This gives our new
riders a chance to discover what its like to race without having to enter
a proper event with loads of experts and flash harrys in it. Just as well
really when you read what happened in it!
A handicap system is in place to give
the slower riders a mathematical head start over the whippets and seeing
as we are so generous we give a gold, silver and bronze medal to the
top 3 fastest riders on handicap.

All
smiles at the end; Robert Wilson, Steve Dennis & Phil Nash Apologies
to those that the camera missed. Notes
from Chris Colford
1. Robert Wilson took a wrong turn twice
(hence his time). This is partly my fault (because I told him the course
was straight down the A24 to the first roundabout, and then straight
back). Still, how could you take TWO wrong turns on an out and back
course.
2. Steve Dennis had just fitted a new pair
of tri-bars, and one of them came off in his hand after about a mile. He
stuffed it down his jersey, and threw it at (ie towards) Eddy Mundy at the
turn. Eddy looked somewhat perplexed when he asked me afterwards whether
this was my tri-bar.
3. According to Jean, one rider (Sam Kigo?)
said that he had ridden round the roundabout at the turn twice.
4. Mark Cole said that his time was no
faster than when he'd done the President's Ten on his mountain bike for
the first time last year. £1,500 wasted on Bianchi bicycle, therefore, it
would appear!
5. Brian Tidey arrived 5 minutes before the
start, wearing shirt and tie, direct from Bristol. This does not, however,
satisfactorily account for the blue armwarmers. Presumably they were his
wife's legwarmers, and he was in such a hurry to get changed that he
didn't notice.
Quite eventful for an evening ten!
