Triathlon

Ardingly tri
report
For some, just cycling isn't enough. For
some wild and wacky Californians in 1974, stringing together swimming,
cycling and running seemed like the natural thing to do. Now those
pioneers have seen their creation take over the sporting world.
Multisport events (triathlons, duathlons,
aquathlons) have seen an explosion in popularity, especially over the last
decade due to the introduction of shorter, introductory events. Now
finding a race nearby is as easy as 1, 2, 3!
There are many resources available for
those wanting to get started. A quick glance at the British
Triathlon Association website or the Triathlete's
Homepage will give detailed listings of races by region. For those
wanting more information, check out the following:
www.insidetriathlon.com
An American magazine, focused on shorter events www.triathlete.com
Again American, focusing on equipment reviews www.xtri.com
Encompasses longer distance races, including off-road (Xterra) races www.ironmanlive.com
The Grandaddy - a link to the Ironman, the ultimate fitness test
You can also Google under 'triathlon,'
'triathlete,' 'aquathlon' or 'duathlon' for a more partisan taste. There
are a stunning array of how-to books available as well at Amazon.
For equipment - you won't want to skimp -
there are specialty shops at your beck and call. In the London area, you
can try Sigma Sports in Hampton Wick or Tri and Run in Hainault. Also you
can ask around for the best single sport shops, ones like Run and Become
in Westminster or the Agreeables' favourite cycle shop, Geoffrey
Butler's in South Croydon.
Of course it goes without saying that
Addiscombe are affiliated to the British Triathlon Association and with a
membership base as broad as ours we have got a huge number of people
looking to try their first ever tri as well as a couple of elites and also
3 Hawaii Ironmen in our ranks who are happy to help people out who are
looking at multisport for the first time.
Give it a tri! If you feel burned out with
just one sport, try mixing two or three together. The results will
surprise you ...
