Oooh...I just noticed the stoker in that pic has one of those lovely parallelogram suspension seatposts (they get much better reviews than the ones that are just a telescopic spring arrangement at the top of the post)....I was v tempted but it would have cost half what we paid for the tandem...so I've resigned myself to a £16 alloy one.

Why a suspension post for the stoker. Is it because you don't see what's coming up you are less prepared than the pilot, or is it just comfort on a touring bike?

Exactly - you just don't see things coming when you're the stoker. Usually the first you know of a pothole is when the saddle whacks you up the ass, and the first you know of any sudden braking is when you shoot forward off the saddle as your arms were not braced. Even if the pilot doesn't get right out of the saddle for a hole I think you just subconsciously brace your legs a little more and ease your weight from the saddle if you can see some rut or obstruction in the road ahead. The stoker doesn't have that luxury.

Just that you weren't really "selling it" :D I guess it's not all smacking in to unseen potholes or you wouldn't race one and now have a touring one.

Keith asked about the lights on my bike last night, they were these ones. Now £48 but I recall only paying £35-40 so must have got them in the January sale.

I suppose Dad and I weren't going that fast so I don't really remember having too much of a problem with potholes and braking. My problem was when Dad started wearing a bag on his back - on a short-wheel base tandem, it meant I kept getting it in the face whenever Dad readjusted it

A good pilot forewarns the stoker
