Ironman

Postby Dominic » Mon Jun 14, 2010 1:50 pm

My elder brother as a 40th birthday present (a couple of years ago) offered to pay for my entry to an Ironman. This has not come to fruition yet but if I were to target an event next year does that give me enough time to get into shape for it?

Running wise. I usually do a bit during the winter just to do something different. Was a member of a running club when I was 16 and was a member of the Scottish schools cross country winning team at about the same time. As a whipper snapper I was able to average 5 minute 10 second miles.

Swimming, not so good. I did do a triathlon 20 years ago which comprised of an open water (sea) swim. It was absolute hell. However I did manage it but I did spend a period of time of swimming five days a week to get there. When I have a crack at it, this will be the area where I seek most help without a doubt. It's all about technique apparently.

I can certainly recommend Mrs Snoop - she made a big difference to my swimming (90secs improvement in one year over 400m about 20%). Remember swimming is the shortest part of the day and cycling is the longest.

Anybody can complete an ironman so 1 year is more than enough. Its about how well you want to do.

Join SLH in Coulsdon. They are a running and tri club and there are loads of free cross country races you can do over the winter as well as organised training sessions if you can make them.

Which one are you doing? I might join you.

I spoke to my brother last night. It is either going to be the UK Ironman ie run and mandated by Ironman or the Outlaw ironman. Both are in August next year. So I better get training.

I also managed to get an Adamo saddle off him because he has bought one and doesn't like it!

Might as well do the UK Ironman if your brother is paying as the Outlaw is not an official Ironman.

True, but the distance is the same. Not sure exactly what you get from Ironman for an extra £200.

You get a more expensive birthday present. Its the thought that counts.

Dominic,
If you're going to put yourself through an Ironman at least choose one somewhere exotic.
Ironman UK is in Bolton!
