To be honest though, we raced the "oppet spar" or open event, which anybody can enter. The elite race was held the following week, this past sunday, with a lot more international entrants. The winner took only 3h51 which is astonishing - more than 23km/h. Apparently it was even colder than the minus 23 we had, and three people died of heart failure.

French entrants at the elite event:

I'm doing the race again this year. Got to beat the boss this time.

Just been for a long weekend in Sweden for training. Didn't all go to plan, first we missed the plane on Thursday night and had to stay in bloody Luton to catch the following morning one. Then I had a sort of gastrentis all weekend which I've just been out of now, still feeling tired though. So didn't do all that much skiing, but it was a good break (from cycling!). Temperatures around minus 10-12, chilly but not too bad.

Going back for a 42km seeding race mid-Feb, then the race proper on 5th March. Am hoping to cut 10% off my time mainly by using more of the fastest diagonal technique which our lovely teacher Karin demonstrated how you should start from the hips.

The closest thing I can think of to train my legs for this (mostly thighs and adductors) is climbing up stairs, so as my office has moved to the 26th floor I will be trying to do a couple of those a day

The race is this coming Sunday 5th March.

If you have nothing else to do on Sunday morning you can follow the progress of the race here whilst having breakfast:

http://www.resultat.vasaloppet.se/VasaW ... &year=2006

(Sylvain Garde, number 6911)

The race starts at 7am (English time, 8h Swedish time). My aim is to finish in 6h25 (6h59 last year), but most importantly to beat my 51 year old Swedish boss who did 6h39 last year and has trained like a demon this year (he's in Sweden skiing as I speak).

Hoping to reach the following checkpoints (UK time) at:

Smagan 7h59
Mangsbodama 8h52
Risberg 9h35
Evertsberg 10h29
Oxberg 11h27
Hokberg 12h07
Eldris 12h49
Mora 13h25

But the start might be slower because there will be 6,000 people in front of me (more than 10,000 in total) and the race starts with a tough 3km climb where there will be traffic jams.

If the snow is good the top guys can expect to finish in less than 4h ...

Doing it again this year, the open event end of Feb this time.

This year the emphasis (considering I've done zero specific training) will not be on beating the boss, but enjoying the race at a more sedate pace, stopping for hot blueberry drink at food stations, taking photos, trying to chat up the few Swedish women I can keep up with ...

And maybe do an evening about it at the ACC club later on.
