Whats the difference between a TT and a Tri bike

Postby Marek » Tue May 26, 2009 9:56 pm

I was reading something recently about a TT bike being different from a Triathlon bike. Apparently something to do with the angles on a Tri bike making it easier to run when you get off the bike. Is that true, I did not quite understand this. Anyone shed some light?

Cheers

If last weekend is anything to go by Tri bikes are ridden by numpties who ride 100 mile sportives in aero helmets.

Apart from that, yes, a really steep seat tube angle that puts you further forward is supposed to make the switch from cycling to running easier. Something to do with the hip angle I think.

At the moment it's quite hard to tell TT and Tri bikes apart and they're often aimed at both markets. Now that the UCI are cracking down on the technical regulations I think the differences will become more apparent, as TT bikes will have to conform to the 3:1 aspect ratio, straight(ish) tubes, minimum saddle set-back from the BB etc. But tri bikes will still be able to use all the fancy aero gizmos.

Sometimes it can just be a name. Some manufacturers call their bikes Tri bikes to open them to a bigger market. Hutch's TT bike is named a Tri bike, I don't know the angles etc but he seems to go quite quickly on it anyway.
