11 of us started out but quickly down to 9 as Steve turned back still having his holiday legs on, and Sylv was just doing a little leg loosener before tomorrow's MTB 12hr (good luck).
The rest of us had a nice ride, regrouped at the top of a couple of hills we all winched, wheezed, and grovelled at a pace we wanted but other than that stayed together and looked out for each other. For me it doesn't matter if you can ride faster or not, you ride at the pace of the group (or you've said you will) on a club run and everyone can enjoy it. We were blessed with good weather so some of the views in the lanes were rather pleasing, with blue sky and after the recent rain plenty of rich greenery rather than the paler washed out look you sometimes get at the end of summer.
The cafe (96degrees) was good with some great looking homemade cakes and proper coffee (Jon's favourite waitress wasn't there but he coped well). Never been there before as I normally don't stop when I'm on rides in that area as it's too close to home. Amusingly a bloke turned up for his cafe stop on a ride through the lanes...on a pair of Lightweight wheels
. Amusingly he was far from a lightweight himself, not sure he got the irony but I was tempted to give him Huw's number as he'd be perfect for his article.
Bumped in to Conor as we were leaving, and Jon turned off a slightly quicker way for home to get there before his slow puncture got the better of him, the rest of us had a scoot along the ridge and a bumpy drop down Slines Oak, fine as long as you raise your bum a few cm off the saddle and just let your knees be your suspension. Lucy turned downhill for home and the rest of us headed back through Warlingham for a farewell at Sanderstead roundabout.
Cheers folks.
