Sunday 12th Sept. - Very hilly ride

On road, off road, round in a big circle or down to the coast, we do the lot. We don't just do it at all speeds and for all levels, we do it Agreeably as well!

What a thoroughly enjoyable morning's ride :D , albeit not ideal if you wanted a flat one.

Rogan, Kieran, Jon H, and Paul (Ingram) joined me for today's jaunt through the countryside. Set off my usual way out through Selsdon, with a little diversion through Littleheath Road as a)it's steeper, and b) it has no traffic, before the down-up-down-big up to Old Farleigh golf course. On and out to tackle Slines Oak Road, a nasty climb at the start of a ride.

On to the descent of Gangers which is a bit sketchy when damp so a bit of care as there were little patches visable in the dappled light through the tree cover, and then the ever nasty Chalkpit. A couple of slightly damp bits under the trees but mercifully no wheel slip today. As far as I can remember these two hills were the only place where there was damp from yesterday's rain and the weather was smashing, nice temperature and crystal clear skies giving us some excellent views as we went up and down the hills 8) .

Skipped across the top of Titsey and down Rectory Lane (where I often take people up at the end of rides) to join up to a great section shown to me by Huw a couple of weeks ago. Down Clacket Lane and over the A25 to climb up to Limpsfield Chart, then straight over and down what looks a bit like a driveway. It's a nice drop which you need a bit of care on and brings you to a gate, nip around that and then left at the bottom. We saw some Old Ports down here, their club run goes more off the beaten track than ours, but they carried straight on at the bottom. Our left took us over to Pootings where I took us left on to the climb up towards Chartwell but then cut across to Toys Hill via Puddledock Lane, a personal favourite.

Down in to Sundridge and on to the next climb, Star Hill, where Jon's legs fell off :( . At the top he said he'd go straight on for home so we waved him off and the remaining four of us went through Knockholt and then right down towards Cudham. A sharp left on to the descent of New Barn Lane which is a bit broken and then a climb up to the main Biggin Hill/Westerham Hill road. On this draggy climb I was still feeling perky so wound it up a touch as it levelled towards the top :P , Paul's legs fell off a bit on this climb :( so was going to cut off for home after Tatsfield and save his pins the final battle with gradient. He was bouncing up the earlier climbs very well so perhaps just not paced enough early on.

We cut through Tatsfield keeping the pace steady so Paul could sit on the back, and then when he turned for home we turned down Beddlestead for the climb of Hessiers. Rogan clearly didn't know this climb as he came passed me on the bottom section, it kinks slightly and then the rapid gear changes as he spotted it going on for the same distance again...but a bit steeper  . Well it would have been rude for me to tell him when he came passed that it went on longer than you think  , you've got to learn for yourself  .

I had intended to cut us back through to Slines New Road to finish with Bug Hill but Rogan and Kieran had to get home so we finished off with a good blast down Featherbed Lane before back home.

I really enjoyed this morning, thanks a lot for joining me chaps so much nicer than a solo ride on a sunny day like today. 50 miles and a smidge over 3 hours for me door to door.

You can zoom in and scroll about to follow the route and flick through the tabs and you get the stats and gradient profile and a cue sheet which you can download to csv and use in excel should you want to retrace it sometime. If you have a garmin you can download the route to your box of tricks from the summary tab.

Great route Andrew! I didn't actually know ANY of those climbs and didn't know we have such gradients within reach
Well done for tee-ing up a thoroughly enjoyable ride :D :D :D

Thanks for the ride Andrew, over 4 hours cycling for me, left around 8:30am and got back at 12.59pm. great weather and company, some nice hills, a mix of short and steep and long and draggy, some thing for everyone, with some scary down hllls. I was surprised my legs lasted so well, as its a while since I did a ride that long.

After the Gangers/Chalkpit loop I was half expecting to be going down Titsey then up White Lane. Maybe that's one for the very very hilly ride.

Enjoyed that little lane after Limpsfield; a good find.

Legs fell off going up Star Hill; I think giving blood on Thursday evening had left me a bit drained.

I second everyone's thoughts on the ride and add my own thanks.
I've been on a couple of Andrews hilly rides over winter and they don't disappoint, it does exactly what it says on the tin. I was unsure whether or not to go for this as a lack of training, form and fitness has left me off the pace, but I decided I needed to suffer a little, and I certainly got home with nothing left to spare. Just made it to the meet in time for departure. Well aware of the terrain we all rode a steady pace with Keiran stretching his legs on the climbs . I felt comfortable all the way to the top of Star Hill, but as Andrew said the draggy little climb after that came up to bite me, and thought best to call it a day. It was definitely time for lunch!
Turned off at the top of Titsey and cycled back home clocking up 4 1/2 hrs riding. A really enjoyable Sundays ride, much better weather than Saturday too.
A recommended ride for sure, we were never that far from home so there is always an option to bail out, great scenery and terrain with a real kick

My knees were feeling it a bit today, I think I will need to change my racing gears (max gear was 39x21 so it was out of the saddle on all the hills) to one suitable for hills/winter. we didn't go into town in the end when I got home, instead we played table tennis (ping pong) in the park where I lost to my wife and son, Oisin (I just managed to save myself from a whitewash 21:1 to Oisin). Had a great sleep last night as well.

Wow 39x21 for that route  .

Glad you enjoyed it, plenty of variations in and around that area, and a bit further South and West so you can do all sorts of riding there, as indeed I do. There's always going to be the odd hill but there's flatter routes that can be taken, and you can cover large distances on great lanes with hardly a car for ages. There are some very tempting looking lanes that I need to suss out which don't really go anywhere or loop around a bit so I may have to think about the best way to weave them in to routes. May end up just wiggling around in a fairly small area and then linking on to the next wiggly nowhere lane. I suspect some of the ones I have my eye on will be more of the training wheels variety than your best bling as on the map they start as a little narrow lane and then get narrower.

[quote="Andrew G"]How far: 80kms but that’s only half the story...
How hilly: There’s 1,100m of climbing :!:

Did 2,430m in 83km yesterday - now that's hilly :D
