Club run 19 March 2016

On road, off road, round in a big circle or down to the coast, we do the lot. We don't just do it at all speeds and for all levels, we do it Agreeably as well!

Club run 19 March 2016

After hanging on successfully with the 17s most of the way down last week, I thought I'd give it another go this week :) Started off at a good pace down the A23 but suddenly, just past the Full Monty, my world narrowed down to the bike and rider in front of me going down in a kind of zigzag pattern and whole lot of shouting. With nowhere to go I found myself lying in the gutter with one leg stuck through the frame of my bike. Somehow landed on my side and then carried on over to my back. Felt my head go back against the road and my helmet die though I didn't realise quite what had happened to it till I tried fixing it back on: helmet itself was intact but the cage inside had disappeared, completely vanished.

Managed to sit up and shout at those standing at the back who had managed to stop to make sure the traffic went round us. Mike, I think it was helped pick my bike up and I could look around to see what state everyone else was in - Robyn's bike seemed the worst off with the brake levers pointing inwards and the headset knocked sideways - until someone else (sorry, forgotten name  ) realised their left-hand rear fork was sheared in one place and looking pretty ropey not far up from the break. Fortunately Dombo was in the group and lives up Netherne so got his car and took the guy back home. Robyn managed to ride off back up the road with Connor escorting her. Hope all involved are ok and are just feeling a bit achey - it really could've been a lot worse. Not really sure what happened but please remember guys, no sudden braking or freewheeling in the group :!: :!:

Rest of the ride was fairly uneventful with the group keeping in steady down from Leigh up over Norwood Hill by the Fox Revived. I was starting to ache so cut off Lambs Green and beat the rest of the group up Rusper Hill to Tanhouse :) Short ride back too - maybe work my way up to 17s followed by Box by mid May. Oh nearly forgot - do try to think about where you call rotate and try to do it somewhere sensible.

Yeah I heard about the incident from you at the cafe. Sounded quite unnerving to me but hopefully all involved are recovering (I did wonder why you weren't wearing a helmet on the way back!)

In contrast, my group CR was quite uneventful - a bit faster than what I am used to. To calm any jitters (and allay my own disquiet of that event), here is a 3-minute clip of the 18's CR - Sat19March.avi
(I got a superb pull from Jack when I was flagging! Thanks again, Jack.)

Cheers, George. Fortunately accidents on the club run are far and few between so we were really unlucky, particularly, Paul I think it was (it takes awhile for names to go in...) with his broken frame. And bikes though expensive, are replaceable.

How did the guy on the single speed free do? He seemed to have stayed with group despite carrying a rucksack and a heft chain and lock!

Joe was amazing! He was never in difficulty. The only time I saw him visibly slow down a bit was on the hill to Rusper but even then I could only follow him. He said to me he's saving to buy a Giant road bike. My guess then is that he would/should be cycling with the 19/20 groups. Nothing is as good as youth! I spent mine playing squash. I wished I had known about cycling earlier but that sport was not on my horizon then :-(

Hi, Toks! Hopefully, like me, the others are just a bit bumped and bruised. We were lucky though poor Paul needs a new bike which will be costly.

Re Paul, the guy who snapped the seat stay on his Specialized, and who I took back to Banstead, I was chatting today to one of the mechanics in Bespoke Cycling near St Paul's and he recommended these guys in Leatherhead for carbon repairs:
