ECCA 12 hour

Are you thinking about starting racing? Ask about future events in here, find out what you can expect at them and who else is going so you can scrounge a lift off someone rather than riding the 30 miles to get there yourself!

ECCA 12 hour

Postby Phil H » Mon Jun 20, 2011 11:19 pm

So, I did the Bentley 100 in nasty conditions. Assuming my brother will put me up I'm going to do the F1/100 on 17/7. Am I insane contemplating the ECCA 12 on 21/8?

From the 100, I know my Specialized Toupe (you thought it was my real hair) might not be the ideal saddle choice. I also know that a certain amount of sweet talking of family is required for them to act as support crew. Questions though:
  • What's the course like? I am not built for uphills.

  • Am I insane even thinking about it?

  • I averaged 21mph on the windy 100. Would an evens schedule be insane? (Assuming good conditions)

  • Anyone else doing it who might share support crew?

  • Is it better to ride skinsuit + tribag or normal jersey?

  • What's the best sort of pie for a 12?

  • Is there a pub near the finish?

  • How many days off work should I book afterwards?

  • Am I insane even thinking about it?

What's the course like? I am not built for uphills.
Flatish for 80 miles (1st circuit), 2nd circuit is a bit lumpy but that is still earlyish in the day so you're still fresh, rolling thereafter.
Am I insane even thinking about it?
Yes, but don't let that stop you.
I averaged 21mph on the windy 100. Would an evens schedule be insane?
In my one and only 12 I didn't achieve evens, and that was in a year when I was regularly going under the hour for 25s. But everyone is different; you may go better at long distances.
Anyone else doing it who might share support crew?
Ask George nicely.
Is it better to ride skinsuit + tribag or normal jersey?
Shorts and jersey easier for er comfort stops.
What's the best sort of pie for a 12?
Something without gravy (gets a bit messy)
Is there a pub near the finish?
Yes
How many days off work should I book afterwards?
None
Am I insane even thinking about it?
Yes, but don't let that stop you.

Good luck!

No harm in doing it if you really want to, but I would only do it if you really want to and are fully prepared for it.

Food and drink etc need to thought through.

Shorts for comfort stops as Jon says, and if you don't stop for a pee 3 or 4 times in the 12 hours then you probably aren't drinking enough which you could pay for near the end.

Re the distance 240 is very hard to do. A good 100 would take say 4h30, double that and you'd only just be starting the finishing circuit which gives you some idea of how hard it is to do.

I'm delaying entering to see how I do on the F1/100 on the 17th. I have a faint memory from the last 100 of it being bl00dy horrible.

I've cracked a couple of ribs attempting to surf. It's clearly a young man's game. So I'm off any strenuous riding for the next month or so.

Poor excuse Phil. You should have at least got a leg bitten off by a shark whilst surfing.
