Re: LONDON X LEAGUE

Postby John G » Wed Aug 24, 2011 6:36 am

Hey Sylv!

Thanks for posting this mate. I am keen to give cycle cross a crack this season! I have only ever done crit/road/track racing.

Can you or does anyone reading this thread recommend a good entry level cycle cross bike? I would not want to spend much to begin with. Can my existing road bike be modified or are the geometries totally different?!

Would it be worth hiring a cross bike to start with to make sure I like it? or can I use my MTB?

Open to suggestions/recommendations.

Thanks

John

I just used a mtb for many years, it might be a little slower (not on all courses!), you can fit rigid forks and thinner tires which will help. I've only just bought a cross bike last year, not sure what best deals are as I bought a frame and put it together with bits I had. No way you can use a road bike, you need better brakes and the mountings are different, plus tire clearance and geometry as you say.

Maybe Planet x? http://www.planet-x-bikes.co.uk/bikes/q ... cyclocross

Thanks mate. Might do what you suggest. Get thinner tyres for the MTB and see how I like the race format etc. Best way to start I think. :D

Yep was a good (if short – under 30min) race thanks to Phil Glow for organising. First time on tubs, early worries of my gluing not being up to scratch and rolling tires was soon replaced by the feeling of awesome traction and grip at 2 bars (and also the worry of pinch flatting as they bottomed out, unphazed, each time I hit a big bump). Gears need sorting out, but bike did the job - we'll see about that in the mud though!

Btw to those whom I haven’t told, I fancied being part of a team for a change this cross season instead of on my tod (there now appears to be a few more takers than usual in acc!) so joined La Fuga Sigma Sport as 2nd claim for off-road. There’s already nine of us signed for the Rapha Super Cross at Alexandra Palace, and we got our first win & podium at HH : )

Sylv, when you were on clinchers what pressure were you running for cross races? My MTB defaults are front 40psi/rear 50psi. I'm not ready for tubs yet, but don't want to be snakebiting all cross season.

Thanks

I run a 2.0 mtb tire at 30psi. Cross clinchers I used about 43 (due to lower air volume). Tubs I have so far been 30-33. Seems you can go down to 20!

Great, thanks for the advice.

Had to sit Fowlmead out yesterday for family reasons, hope to be at Hogs Hill this Sunday though.

Congratulations on the great 4th place and hopefully a good start to the season:

Saw that this morning too - guess it will depend on how many laps the race is!

1 to 4 - ok
5 to 7 - doubtful
8 to 10 - coma
