Catford and Bec Hill Climbs - 9th October

Are you thinking about starting racing? Ask about future events in here, find out what you can expect at them and who else is going so you can scrounge a lift off someone rather than riding the 30 miles to get there yourself!

Catford and Bec Hill Climbs - 9th October

Postby Andrew G » Wed Sep 21, 2011 9:27 pm

Hello masochists, want to ride through a wall of fans screaming support like a Tour rider? Here's your chance.

I've entered the Catford and Bec Hill Climbs again which are on the 9th October, the Catford on is on Yorks Hill at 10am and the Bec is on White Lane at 2pm. Both local (Catford's is near Ide and Bec's by Titsey).

Both are absolute classics and the Catford is the oldest continuous bike race in the World.

Both are 700 yards time trials up very steep hills and ensure a few minutes of agony but a fantastic experience.

They are TTs in the normal sense, each rider sent off at 1 minute intervals and the fastest rider wins. The difficult bit comes from the fact the the pusher off doesn't push you, they'll just let go, and then you have to get to the top of a stupidly steep hill as fast as you can. Over the years plenty of top riders have turned up to have a go as well so you could be in the same race as a star, or with Germain Burton a future star.

Entry is as per a normal open TT on a CTT form (link in the websites below). You just fill in the details (we are in London South district) and make sure you fill in the second page if you've done a hill climb before. Send with a cheque made payable to the relevant club by Tuesday 27th Sept. to the details in the web links below.

What about the 4 hill challenge?

http://www.catfordcc.co.uk/hillclimb/about.aspx?sm=16_1

The Brighton Mitre Hill Climbs on Saturday, together with the Catford CC Hill Climb Classic on Sunday morning and the Bec CC Hill Climb on Sunday afternoon form the ‘4 Hills Competition’ with a prize for the best overall placing in the four events. This guarantees a good weekend's racing and makes it a worthwhile trip.

nuts!! :D

The 4 Hills Challenge is good, I did it a few years ago. I won't be doing it this year as John "the old 'un" Lovell is back from the Isle of Wight for this weekend with Matt from the Vectis Roads CC who is doing the Catford and Bec, I said I'd show Matt the hills on Saturday afternoon so he doesn't race them blind.

The Brighton Mitre ones don't get the crowds but are good events as the organiser is a top bloke. I might do the 4 Hills again next year though. The first hill is a killer steep one like the Bec hill but longer. The afternoon hill is a long (5 miles-ish) one but a big ring power climb. Some people take 2 bikes and use a TT bike for the afternoon hill.

You'll have to beat the likes of Pete Tadros if you want to win the 4 Hills though.

Hill climbs hurt a lot so although over the weekend you've hardly covered any distance at all it feels like you've been through the wringer.

That was agonie...but felt a sense of accomplishment at the end of it!

Thanks to all the ACC members who where there cheering us on. George's disticntive cheering helped in grinding up (on the 25/39 cogs) the last 30 meters.
