Anfield 100

Are you thinking about starting racing? Ask about future events in here, find out what you can expect at them and who else is going so you can scrounge a lift off someone rather than riding the 30 miles to get there yourself!

Anfield 100

Anyone else fancy a trip oop North? It's on the Queen's Diamond Jubilee bank holiday Monday (4th June) and I shall be going to sample this classic. Happy to give a lift if anyone fancies a trip, I'll drive up the day before and stay overnight.

The Anfield BC are one of the oldest cycling clubs in the world and their 100 is one of the oldest races in the world. The Anfield 100 is a renowned classic and one I want to tick off the list, although from what I know it is not a fast course and quite a tough event. A bit of guesswork based of previous times as I don't know the area - HQ at Shawbury and course goes to Prees Heath and Market Drayton before returning to Shawbury for four laps of a circuit.

I know that area well, ridden hundreds of miles around that area when i lived oop north. There's an RAF base at Shawbury and as kids we'd cycle out there to watch the red arrows practicing. Muller yoghurts are made in Market Drayton if you fancy one half way round the lap :D

is there a course map Andrew?

Any tips you have on the roads would be helpful Ant, cheers.

Hmm. It's sort of midway between my sister's and my inlaws so doable for me with free accommodation.

Not sure how it fits into my schedule though as I haven't got The Book so I haven't got a schedule. Is it likely to be the week after the Hounslow 100 on H8?

ok out of Shawbury its an up hill drag followed by a couple of dips and rises. Out of the town its pretty rolling but nice straight roads until you hit the new bypass where it gets pretty flat up to the Tern Hill roundabout. On to the A41 it again gets a bit draggy as is the nature of the roads around that part but nothing bad from memory though I didn't go that way a great deal. Back on the A53 towards Market Drayton it drags a little up hill from the roundabout but then flattens out, again nothing that will hurt really. Looks like your turning at the first roundabout (the map looks old ??) Fear not though as if its the second its pretty flat out to it. Onto the B roads and the B5063 drags up a little if again my memory ain't playing tricks on me (I have a great pic of Robert Miller taken at this junction somewhere) and from then it just rolls along. I think there's a bit of a climb up towards the turning at Crudgington where it joins the $$2 (dairy on the corner) but its not bad and probably worse in my memory banks than I recall. The 442 just rolls along nicely, nothing taxing at all.

I'll be going up that way soon so I'll do a full recce for you but from the comfort of my car as I'll be passing through there on my way to Shrewsbury.

The A53 is a very very busy road so I hope they're starting people off early.

Hounslow 100 is on 27th May on the road to hell. Don't know that I can face that event going up and down the same 10 mile strip of tarmac for 5 laps, the wind often picks up on the course during the morning, particularly the extra bit (ie 2nd to 3rd rbt) too as you discovered only too well last year. It was the same for the Nat 50 and was horrid.

Thanks for the info Ant, a bit draggy and rolling in places but nothing too bad then. 6am first rider's off. TT courses are generally very tightly controlled on when you are allowed on what roads and the police insist you are off certain roads by certain times. Traffic counts get done to monitor the volume and flow, although some districts are a bit more lax than others. For example on the Horsham course we promote our 25 on the last rider has to be off the road by 9.30am. More 100s these days are moving to the type of course where you do a faster DC section and then move on to 2-4 circuits of a loop on quieter roads, probably most of them by now.
