ACC Track Championships HH 15:00 Saturday Sept 8

Are you thinking about starting racing? Ask about future events in here, find out what you can expect at them and who else is going so you can scrounge a lift off someone rather than riding the 30 miles to get there yourself!

I believe from memory that it is free, you just turn up and race. If there's a charge then it's club 10 type fee so nominal.
Races are normally sprint, scratch, pursuit/TT. Might be others but can't remember.
You can only race a fixed wheel bike without a brake, if you have one but not many sprockets I can bring some plus a chainwhip etc. I don't know about hiring on the day hopefully Mark can confirm. I can lend mine to people so they can race but obviously only when I'm not.
You have to have done an induction session to race which is worth doing anyway if you haven't ridden on the track before. Turn up this Saturday morning at Herne Hill (not sure time, google vcl Herne hill and you should find details easily enough). Turn up early to make sure you can hire a bike as they get taken quite quickly. If Sylv's bike is still available to borrow and will fit you then it's a good bike.

I have discussed events with De Laune which will be:

• 10 lap warm up race
• 500m Scratch heats
• Pursuit
• 500m Scratch Final for the SPRINT CHAMPIONSHIP TROPHY presented by Ernie Mills for the winner of the Club’s Sprint Championship
• Devil
• 5000m Scratch. For the FIVE MILES’ CHAMPIONSHIP TROPHY presented by Percy Huggett and awarded to the winner of the Club’s Five Miles Track event.

If we have enough Youth/U14 we could run additional events

Thank you very much Mark, a fun afternoon, shame we can't get more people down to the track.

Congratulations to Steve for winning the sprint, I'll get you one year :D , and the 5k scratch. I kicked off the attacks in that and thinned the field but then Sylv put in attack after attack. When the DeLaune guy went and I had to sprint to grab his wheel I clocked Sylv on my wheel and guessed that he'd go as soon as DeLaune and I swung up, sure enough he did and with 3 laps to go my legs said no. Steve out sprinted Sylv for the win.

Sylv stopped Steve getting the pursuit by beating him by 2 seconds, glad I sat that one out with all the hacking being done afterwards.

Thanks Mark and those who came to ride or watch, incl the two young uns

Good to be back "on track"

Nice one Andrew on the sprint, I thought I could go with 1/2 lap to go but Mr Green was on my wheel and came past

5-lap race was tough, but worth the effort to deny Steve another hat-trick of trophies!

Scratch race was good fun, I just didn't want a Delaune to win it so was happy enough that it was Steve who took it- Rich went early but I stayed on Steve's wheel which was obviously the one to go for.

Top event Mark. May I also add my thanks (and Tom's).

Despite being out of form, it was a good laugh. Nice to be able to give it full beans and not worry about potholes and white vans. Also a bit of silliness in the sprint and that moment when I thought I had Sylv. Fool.

Big thanks to Mark for organising, and also to all those who helped push, cheer, jeer, take photos, video, ride and race.

Sprint heat - Rich went for a long'un from the gun, catching me and Mark napping. He'd obviously planned it and it almost paid off. Good try Rich 8). Andrew made it through the other heat with a good canny race, passing Sylv with about 30metres to the finish. With about 150m to go we thought Phil might steal the honours with his dive up the inside coming into the final bend.

Andrew then sat out the Pursuit. I almost joined him and sort of wish I had. I went off a bit fast and with 2 laps to go I was hanging. Legs and lungs burning I kept going, but Sylv had the better of me by those 2 seconds, nice work Sylv. Coming off the track my throat and tubes were as dry as a dry thing, and I started to cough. It quickly got worse ending up with me in the middle of the track on my hands and knees coughing till I very nearly chucked up, my eyes watering and unable to breath in, swallow or talk. It was very disconcerting and something I'd never experienced before

15 minutes later things had calmed down and it was the call for the sprint final. I led, Andrew close to my wheel. When you watch it on the telly, the tactics look easy. When you are doing the racing, all tactics go out the window and you haven't got a clue what your'e doing  . I decided to wind up the pace fairly early hoping to keep Andrew behind or having to go the long way round me if he wanted to win. Fortunately I had enough in the legs to keep him at bay. Next year Andrew?

Scratch race - All took part including de Laune, making 12 riders. Easy start, slowly picking up pace each lap till just before halfway (of 18 laps) when an attack happened as I was at the back  . I didn't initially see it go and had to make up 50m coming around the other 5 riders who had been distanced. Back in and the final half of the race was pretty quick with various attacks going of the front and being pulled back. Everything was hurting now but the end was near. The rider in front of me pulled up the track leaving me at the front with a lap and a half to go. I was quite happy with this as I felt I could control the race from there, until Rich came flying past down the back straight. He'd gone a bit early though and I came back past round the final bend to take the win. :D

I didn't feel at all well on the way home, and all evening, I think I left everything out on the track today. All in the name of fun though

Well done to the 2 young lads today (Tom and ? Sorry didn't catch his name). We'll see more of them in years to come I'm sure.
