SERRL Winter Race Coaching

Are you thinking about starting racing? Ask about future events in here, find out what you can expect at them and who else is going so you can scrounge a lift off someone rather than riding the 30 miles to get there yourself!

SERRL Winter Race Coaching

Postby Keith » Mon Oct 14, 2013 5:20 pm

This year alongside the Winter Race series, the league will be running some race coaching sessions to encourage more novice riders to try racing. Each month will have one coaching session & workshop open to Novice 4th & 3rd cat riders, as well as a Race event which will be a 1 hr handicap for all categories (Regional C+).

Thanks for the link Keith. I am very interested in doing this... seems like quite a good deal for 50 quid.

Is anybody else thinking of having a go, and if so - how are you planning on getting to Cyclopark? I can drive to the last two sessions but won't have a car available for the first two. If I could have a lift of somebody and chip in for petrol, I would be eternally grateful :D

Cheers,
Ant

Hi Simon

Sounds good. I checked Rider HQ a few times this week to make sure it isn't suddenly full up and there are 12/40 currently in for session #1, so a little bit of time left, yet. I will probably sign up at some point this weekend and hope the weather forecast is reasonable for next Sun.

Right - I am entered into Training session #1.

Will see how it goes before deciding if I do any of the others or indeed any of the Handicap race series... Now I'll just cross my fingers for warm & sunny weather next Sunday

Hi Keith

Yes - I found it useful, personally. Fairly rudimentary stuff to begin with but as the coach said, it was the first of four progressive sessions.

The format was quite well balanced, with about 1 hour of indoor workshop that discussed preparation and so on. After that we went out onto the circuit and that lasted a couple more hours, so very good value for 15 quid. The guy who was running it was well organised and had a good style of delivery. He had 3 or 4 others helping him out and they all came across really well and were enthusiastic about what they were doing. We did basics to begin with and built up to doing a fun relay race at the end of the session that included aspects of what we had covered in the session.

I would recommend it to anybody else interested in going along. This was my first time at Cyclopark and I was very impressed with the facilities there. The coach sent an email Today as a follow-up, summarising the main points from Yesterday and asking for feedback. He also gave a brief indication of what we might expect in session #2, which will be focussed on indoor training for the workshop aspect then more race orientated training on the track, afterwards.

Cheers for the heads-up on this course,
Ant

Agree with Ant, really useful session led by Luke Anderson from SERRL who is a commissaire and BC coach. very enthusiastic and knowledgeable.
I've signed up to all 4 sessions and probably going to try the last race in the series in Feb. The sessions are progressive but IMO they would be just as useful of you only went to 1 or 2. Luke has asked for feedback to tailor the next sessions around what people what to know rather than having a rigid set format for the 4 sessions. I would recommend to anyone thinking about starting to race, or who wants to learn from experienced racers in a relaxed atmosphere. The facilities at cyclopark are excellent and perfectly suited to this sort of 2 part workshop and track coaching session and it's only 40mins from Coulsdon by car. I found the race day preparation section particularly useful.
As well and Ant and myself, Matt H and Jon were also there from the club.

Thanks for the heads up Keith.
