Crystal Palace: Tips For Newbies and 4th cats

Are you thinking about starting racing? Ask about future events in here, find out what you can expect at them and who else is going so you can scrounge a lift off someone rather than riding the 30 miles to get there yourself!

Woh don't worry Mo it won't be that fast. Adam, Mo is a youth (yes even younger than your good self  ).

Mo the youth races are run in different age categories but you all ride together. It's a bit tricky to work out what's happening from the side when they're having their race(s) as there is a complete mix of ages riding around at the same time.

Even with all of you racing at the same time the field isn't that big and it spreads out so often only 2s or 3s riding together so you don't need to worry about having to jump in to the middle of a big pack straight away.

The different age groups seem to all line up together on the line and then be set off in blocks according to which race (age group) they are in. I guess that the race length is different too depending on age. There is one kid who is amazing to watch as he's so small he has to ride out the saddle all the way and sort of roll over his crossbar with each pedal stroke :) .

If you want full details then Paul T is your man as he's ACC's Road Race Guru and will be able to tell you everything. You may need to restrict your maximum gear for example, but this is easily done.

It starts up again next season in April (I think) and runs every Tuesday, weather permitting.

It would be great to see you give it a go, and as long as you're in an Addiscombe jersey you'll get plenty of support from the rest of us as we wait for our races.

All the best for a quick recovery from Saturday and glad to see you're keen to bounce straight back on the bike.

ok, thanks, I was just wondering, cos I got an email about the ToB support races. But I could probably take it with the youths if the adults is 22-25. I managed that speed while on holiday on the flat for a few miles(yes i lugged a bike bag round kings cross all by lonesome)

The £20 fee is made up of a £10 race fee, and a £10 'fine', in place of the now discontinued day licence. The fine is payable by the race organisers if entrants do not have an annual race licence. I would suggest paying the fine for the first 2 or 3 races you attend before committing to the cost of an annual licence (approx £66),as you may decide it's not for you. If you get bitten by the bug though and want to race regularly it' s worth joining British Cycling and applying for an annual licence which will enable you to race at a number of circuits in the the region, (or nationally if you're really keen!) reducing the cost per race to approx £10. :D

Good tip about the fine.

I think you'll find that there are alot of newbies including me that didn't know that. TOP TIP :D

Just to add, Palace is one of the hardest crits to ride as a newbie, so I wouldn't decide whether racing is or is not for you based on your 1st one or two races at Palace. At least try a less technical circuit such as Hillingdon, which incidently is 4ths only so you wont have your legs ripped off by 2nd cat wannbees

Thaks Toks for the advice, I think Palace would put me off If I done it. I like the sound of a 4ths only race, at least you know where you stand in the race.
