13-29 Campag cassette Compatability

Postby Paul on the Pearson » Sun Jun 14, 2015 6:17 pm

Hi All,
A technical question.....
Am off doing a few sportives soon and my usual gearing..53/39 with a 25 cassestte is a bit of a grind on steep hills, am also out of shape! Has any one got any experience of using a 13-29 cassette with a standard cage campag 10 speed rear derailier. Have looked on line and there seems to be a bit of conflicting yes it works/ no it doesn't..?

Cheers

Paul

Campag say that the maximum sprocket size with a short cage is a 28 and for a 29 you should use a medium cage. You may get away with it as long as you never go to the 29 when in the big ring, which you shouldn't do anyway and the second sprocket down is a 26.

I've used a 13-29 before for a big hills holiday as you effectively use it as a 9 speed 13-26 with the 29 as a bail out option. I opted for the medium cage to play safe but do some Google and eBay searches and like me you should be able to pick up say a Mirage medium cage for not a lot of money.

Hi Andrew,

Thanks for that. I reckon what I'm going to do is abandon the 29 cassette idea, I('ll just have to shape up) and get a 13- 27, found one at Merlin Cycles. The sportive I'm doing is the Two Moors ride in Devon, nothing ridiculously long and steep..(I hope).

Cheers

In case you're still considering it, I used to run 13-29 before I went compact and had no issues.

I know that my post is a bit past it but I used to run a 13-29 Campag 10 speed on a standard cage with no problem.

But I have frigged it now to a 11-29 which is a fantastic spread (just merged two cassettes together), speed and hill climbing.
