Road Race Training - Ouch.

I know all this training business makes us sound a bit serious but, well, some people really are into this bike lark so feel free to talk about all training & self improvement related topics in here

Road Race Training - Ouch.

Postby Andrew G » Sun Nov 05, 2006 6:45 pm

Moved to it's proper home in the training section.

Today was the first of the training sessions (next one on the 19th) which takes place on the roads around one of the Surrey League circuits, it's on a lot of the roads used on the CR so familiar.

Good ACC turnout with about 7 of us there (count 'em Toks for next season :D ) Split into speed groups with a coach in each group to keep an eye on things and provide help and assistance where needed.

Basically today was spent tear-arsing (technical term) around the lanes doing a high speed continuous through and off, ye Gods I've never worked so hard. Near the end 5 of us were sent up the road to work together, while the rest of the group had to close us down (fortunately I was in the front group so didn't have to do the chasing).

Alan, who did this last year, said the next session will probably move on and be based more on closing gaps and brake aways, so plenty to look forward to for those who can only make the 19th's training - see you there. :D

There was some promising material - the sessions were good with about 20 attending in all, unusually about 50/50 m/f and we were kitted out with Surrey league training squad jerseys - so looked less motley than we might.

It was a brilliant day to be out and I can definitely finger Brian Nolan and Adrian as very strong right now - the rest of us struggled to keep up and we were nicely stretched to the limit, and did did an addition 30+miles on the there and return journey, culminating in a great ride along the Coulsdon Bypass where we had the road to ourselves.

not too late for others to join in the fun.

Interesting to see how many riders are out in the the Surrey lanes on a sunday.

Training

A great session. After a few laps of the small circuit through and off in a mixed ability group with Alan at the helm we were split into ability based groups and glad to say most of the ACCers naturally gravitated towards the fast group. Bloody hell that was tough. We did a fast through and off on the race route then as Andrew explained split and chased down the breakaway group by which time my legs were reduced to appendages without any ability to propel me forward at all and was completely knackered, but will be back for more on the 19th. Had a good run back into Coulsdon even had a sprint on the new bit of road. Highly recommended.

What a day it was yesterday. Really nice to ride down and back to Brockham in glorious sunshine with a particularly agreeable bunch of Agreeables. On the way down those present and correct were Alan, Andrew, Paul D and Steve; on the way back Steve was replaced by Brian N.

A leisurely punt got us to Brockham early enough for a spell of quiet reflection as we contemplated the pagan scenes on Brockham village green. There was a still-burning bonfire (a little too reminiscent of The Wicker Man for comfort), a smouldering hog roast and a gathering morris troupe. I began to imagine that the locals were eyeing us warily, perhaps with a view to sacrificing us on the fire in return for a better harvest next year.

I came out of this troubling reverie to find myself wearing a training bib and in a provisional group comprising us ACCers and a bevy of winsome maidens. It was quite a mixed-ability group - some had never ridden with a group before - but as we span round and round the circuit, everyone followed Alan's advice and instructions and quickly got the hang of the thru'n'off technique. The pace wasn't exactly demanding at this point, but I didn't hear any of the chaps complaining...

It couldn't go on like this for long, however, and at the regroup at Leigh village hall, we bade the ladies farewell and set off into for a faster, longer
circuit that, as Andrew points out, took us into familiar CR territory. Here we were joined by another ACC'er whose name I don't know, but whose Olmo bike in Venezuela/Columbia colours I'd seen before.

Together with Alan, Paul (and an Australian fellow who failed on several occasions to comply with such basic instructions as "Left here!" or "Right here!"), I was in the chasing group in the pursuit exercise which got the heart racing fit to burst. Luckily, we had our stooge Brian in the breakaway group and he did the decent thing and let us catch him.

(By the way, we lost Steve quite early on in the fast group, and never saw him again - hope he made it back OK and escaped the vengeful clutches of the villagers.)

The time flew by as quickly as the miles, and we were soon dropping off our bibs, filling up our water bottles and taking our leave of the ladies at John Leitch's and setting off for home. By now the sun was dipping fast but there was no danger of getting cold as Paul knocked out a furious pace at the front on the A25. We kept this up through Reigate and up the drag towards Redhill and I think we were all pleased to see the Texaco garage at the junction, where we stocked up on and wolfed down proprietary carbohydrates (of which sugars: 100%).

All that remained was the Merstham drag, the reward for which was a spin on near-vestal Tarmacadam. Very nice too - for now...

I'd cheated earlier by driving to CSS (couldn't face picking my way on a bike through Croydon and Streatham), so it was here that the group and I parted company. Such was Brian's enduring enthusiasm for the chase that he caught my car up in Wallington and then again just before the Carshalton turn-off.

So ended an excellent day in the saddle. I'd echo the above comments and urge everyone try to get down to the next session on the 19th. I'm in Wales then so will miss it, but will definitely be attending as many of these sessions as I can over the winter.

May I also say that the day really underlined what a great cycling education you get from ACC. I thought all our boys' riding discipline, skill and expertise really stood out. That said, it was also great to see so many people new to cycling, of both sexes, some of them pretty young, out there giving it a go.

........that would be me.

I thought it was a good session which was hard enough after a fast CR on the Saturday ...though possibly not fast enough for the young (compared to me, anyway) rider from Reading CC who seemed determined to show us what he and his fine Isaac machine could do on the through and off session, which just underlined how much further my / (our?) fitness needs to go. Still, I'm looking forward to more punuishment on the 19th.

Ouch

Great write up Adrian.

Had to drop out with the onset of cramp and the realisation that
staying up till 3 at a party the night before is not the best
preparation for what was turning into a fairly fierce through an off.

Great day out though. I took a leisurely ride back to Croydon via
Reigate just enjoying being on the road on a fantastic day.

However, the moral of the story is 'Fail to prepare and prepare to fail'

Great company and brilliant to see so many keen riders out there.

I will second what the others have said above.. It was a great day out to be training around the Surrey lanes...
I arrived a bit late and tagged onto a group whilst waiting for John Leitch to bring his group out - did I miss much ? I thought he would be talking about useful stuff for budding racers ?
Not sure about Alan's comment about me being strong ( he is def right about Adrian ! ) - you guy's all got to the petrol garage before me - you dropped me on the hills before Merstram ! ( not sure how to spell that ).
Doing the extended thru 'n off was good but I was running out of breath / gas at times... looking forward to the 19th for more of the same but not sure about the TOSH this Saturday... if it's on and I am out i will def be pootling along as having a few weeks of the bike has left me feeling heavy 'n sluggish uphill
