I haven't started training yet because...

I know all this training business makes us sound a bit serious but, well, some people really are into this bike lark so feel free to talk about all training & self improvement related topics in here

I haven't started training yet because...

Postby Toks » Mon Nov 23, 2009 9:37 am

I can't be arsed   No actually its not that funny and Stephs Mum said I've got a Belly. Two and a half months with 5/6 short commuting rides at around 15mph and I've put on 4 kilos. Right I will begin training on Tuesday just as long as it isn't raining, cold, windy, dark, cloudy or damp. Don't you dare mention that five letter word starting with T and ending with O :(

First I was thinking of tubby, then tummy but neither end in 'o', then it hit me, turbo. Anyway I did a nice 4h40m cycle on Saturday, the roads were pretty empty of cyclists and box hill was almosr deserted. It was the first time on the road bike in months, so light compared to the commuting bike, and nice to go for a cycle without a pannier or bag on your back.

I'm sure you'll shift kilos in time for next season, in the mean time think of them as atraining and motivation aid.

You lazy fat man Toks  , I thought you had an intimate relationship with your turdo? Gave it a name and whispered sweet nothings to it.

I'd have thought 4 kilos would have just put a bit of meat on those bones, you were whippet thin before.

Why start Tuesday? Do you mean to tell us you didn't ride in today  , fortunately I made it in in light drizzle before it started chucking it down. I'd call you a lightweight but it seems that's not the case anymore  .

Hey Toks that's an impressive performance - sandbagging for the 2010 race season and it's still only November '09!

...I have been off the bike since mid august. Almost entirely. Due to repeated, mildlyannoyingnotveryseriousbutbadenoughtopreventtraining syndorme (ie, a series of slight colds). Got back on the bike 10 days ago and felt great, had two motivating rides and everything very positive. Got a quite bad cold within the next two days and had to leave it alone since. 3 MONTHS of mediocre ILLNESS!!!

Cancer, AIDS, I can live with, but slight colds? Now I have a chest infection (a mild one  ) which is like "yeah it's there but I'm not actually 'feeling' ill... Touch the bike though and it'll be pneumonia at the drop of a cat, sorry hat... Salem just sat on me.

Anyway, for every day lost to illness, take 2 days off to recover before training - by that formula I'll start again in May (providing of course I'm healthy again next week). See you on the line in mid-October Toks (if I CAN see round your engorged belly :D

A genuinely scary piece of advice from the 'Old Wives tales' handbook of training - avoid at all costs

Well, you've probably heard the advice offered in various cycling publications "For every day of illness, take two days off before resuming training."

Whilst this sounds like reasonable advice (and often is) it's a bit of a blanket approach which doesn't take into account a) what the illness is b) the severity of the illness and c) what stage the athlete is at in his racing/training. All/any of which might impact greatly on the decision of how much recovery time is needed

I hadn't heard that before, but think it is a terrible piece of advice! It will no doubt cost many people days where they could be training, and have a greater negative effect later on to morale when fitness is not where it could/should be.

For example, on Sunday I was out in the rain. The ride was cut short but not before I became seriously cold. As a result I became really groggy later that evening and yesterday. This morning, it seems to have manifested itself as a minor cold. Is it going to stop me doing an hour long spinning session on the turbo now... No!

Chest infections, and anything else below the neck, yeah stop training and recover. If its just a cold or a bit of a cough, then theres nothing wrong with continuing training as long as you take into account the illness and adjust the intensity accordingly...

Wise words Huw. For example after a day spent having a heart attack it may be advisable to have more than two days off. Three should do the trick.

I don't know if I can be called a true sandbagger Keith (not like an ex pro doing a 2/3 stage race  ) . Yes I know I've been a second cat twice (2007 and 2009) but in most races I was punching above my weight each time. Making second cat isn't that difficult especially if you do enough races; becoming a good 2nd (in my case) would require better mental resolve, harder training and more racing which I've never really done. :( Maybe one day I'll dedicate the whole year and get to be a good 2nd cat. For now I'll take things easy and watch yourself and Sylv's assault on 2nd catdom with interest next year :D
