Do you find your low resting heart rate is too slow?

I know all this training business makes us sound a bit serious but, well, some people really are into this bike lark so feel free to talk about all training & self improvement related topics in here

Do you find your low resting heart rate is too slow?

Postby sonic909 » Wed Dec 09, 2009 1:30 am

I have a feeling that your all gonna say go to a doctor thats not right... but i feel fine so i thought i'd run it past you guys to see if its normal.

I cycle like a maniac for an hour a day, so am quite anaerobically fit. My resting heart rate is 36bpm and my max is 197bpm. I cruise at about 170bpm on my way to work but spin up to 190+ for overtaking cars and stuff. I'm 23, so its not totally weird to have such a decent range.

I seem to have dizzy spells, or borderline blackouts when i have been resting and then jump into action. My problem comes when i want to do something quickly; get up off the sofa, jump out a car, spring off the floor and run ect ect and my vision will go black/dark, i feel weak and dizzy and lose my balance, often ending up sitting where i began. This only lasts for like 3-5 seconds and bang my hearts up to speed and i am off on a mission.

Does anyone else experience this?

get a referral from your gp for an ecg and echo to check your heart, all athletes should get this done, i've had mine checked this year, and an MRI scan

get a gp referral leter from this charity in tadworth Cardiac risk in the young
http://www.c-r-y.org.uk/general_informa ... diac_s.htm
general info here
http://www.c-r-y.org.uk/general_informa ... diac_s.htm

athletes are actually at risk as much as people who don't exercise, i was surprised

International heart and sports medicine experts have called for a Europe-wide cardiovascular screening programme for all young athletes before they are allowed to take part in competitive athletics

Keith, go to your gp by all means, but I`m sure there is nothing abnormal going on. Because of your low resting hr the blood pools when you are sitting, so when you stand up the blood needs a little time to get to your brain. This causes you to feel light headed, etc. Perfectly normal in an athlete like yourself.

Probably find that you have a low blood pressure as well.

Hope this helps

That is very low. If after your ECG tests nothing untoward is found then you have a very efficient heart and ned to gt along to British cycling. You could be a hidden talent.

iron supplements are not good for you and can be toxic if you don't actually need them, check with your doctor on that one too, you would need to have a blood test for that

I've heard of these 'symptoms' before in people who have developed a high-degree of aerobic fitness in a relatively short period of time. In all probability you have nothing to worry about and things will settle down over time and the effects become less noticeable. Having said that, you really should, as a precaution, get yourself checked out - it's better to be sure with such matters.....

Also make sure that you get checked-out somewhere competent with an interest and experience dealing with athletes, especially for more endurance-related sports. Your average GP / NHS registrar is likely to be a waste of space.

This is the guy i saw for my ECG and echo and exercise ECG, he is the best guy in the uk for cardiac endurance athletes as he specialises in this field, get agp referral to see him, not trying to scare you or anyone though, as athletes we are still at risk of heart disease

Sounds like you ride a fair amount, so I would not be too worried about your resting heart rate at 36. When I am in reasonable shape mine can be down to around 40ish. So I don't think you need to worry about the low range. In relation to the getting up quick etc, I think this is quite normal, my advice would be, don't get up quick. Am sure that even sedentary people get the dizzy's when they get up quick.

If you can get an ECG done though at a good price then I think it is worthwhile just to check for any defects, not that what you have said would mean you have any.

Cheers
