Herne Hill - tyre choice

I know all this training business makes us sound a bit serious but, well, some people really are into this bike lark so feel free to talk about all training & self improvement related topics in here

Herne Hill - tyre choice

Postby Matt Stallion » Tue Apr 13, 2004 9:09 pm

As a track newbie, can anyone advise me on whether Herne Hill are prescriptive about tyre choice. I am planning to ride my road-going fixie, minus front brake of course. It's shod with Conti GP3000 at the moment but I'm happy to switch if these are not suitable.
Thanks

you wont ride if the place is wet, so ull most likely never geta puncture, unless ur real unlucky!

the fastest tyre, is without a douby the best..therefore, less treat is better, bald is perfect.

i use michelin pro race tyres...the fastest tyre on the planet without a doubt!

but only for racing, they suck if you train on them!

although, if you ever plan on taking those same tyres to an indoors track, michelin slicks are not allowed, they are too slippery. ( something to do with the michelin compound rather than them being slick)

continental, vittoria or shwalb for track are ideal, especially with a slight file pattern.

there is a difference in feel from using clinchers or tubs as well.
I rode my track bike with vittoria tubs (@10bar) on HH with carbon wheel at the back and spokey at the front and the feedback was incredible, almost too much as the surface at HH is slightly rippled in places. ( im used to riding indoors where its smooth as a babies bum)
I also rode my road bike on there on the same day with michelin pro race clinchers and mavic wheels and it was a totally different ride. hardly felt the ripples but at the same time it felt more vague handling.

you cant really go wrong with vittoria or conti as they arent too expensive and are also good on the road and indoor track.

hope thats not confused you too much
