V02Max

I know all this training business makes us sound a bit serious but, well, some people really are into this bike lark so feel free to talk about all training & self improvement related topics in here

V02Max

Postby huw williams » Wed Mar 03, 2010 1:18 pm

After watching Petter Northug win the 50K XC skiing gold at the weekend I gathered together some interesting numbers on V02 max a feature in Cycle Sport
Northug's is reportedly 96 which is pretty amazing, here are some others

Greg Lemond - 92-94
Bradley McGee - 89
Indurain - 88
Cadel Evans - 87
Armstrong 83-85
Boardman - 80

If you really want to coach a future TdeF winner though, train your dog to ride a bike, a fully trained sled-pulling Husky has a V02 Max of 240!!!

I heard that cross country skiers are allowed a haemocrit level of 54% too.

[quote]Greg Lemond - 92-94
Armstrong 83-85

This limiting factor was a bone of contention for Lemond and hence his mantra "the numbers never lie".

I wondered what you would have said if Armstrong's figures were higher than Lemonds.

There is more to fitness than VO2max anyway.

having a high haematocrit isnt necessarily an advantage, the oxygen carrying capacity does increase but the blood becomes very viscous very quickly as the % increases, thus the flow rate and hence overall oxygen transfer is worse.

The optimum is somewhere 45-48%, i forget the exact figure.

its not necessarily how high your vo2 max is, but how close your vo2 peak is (ie your AT point) to your vo2 max from tests i have done that really determine an athletes potential.

but according to the book 'Born to Run' humans are unique amongst mammals in that our breathing is not linked into our stride so we can take multiple breathes per stride but four legged mammals can't which is why humans can eventually hunt down deer etc. Also our heat loss mechanism is better.

i dunno i think the training group had a pretty good heat signature going up thru merstham last sat on the CR, leaving a vapour trail sucking out the oxygen like a vacuum, i'm not so sure my [quote]heat loss mechanism is better/quote] than theirs...as i got shot out the back like a few others
