Chaingang 18/3/10

I know all this training business makes us sound a bit serious but, well, some people really are into this bike lark so feel free to talk about all training & self improvement related topics in here

I did the DP chaingang last night and there was a good turn out at least 10 of us all doing a good T+off for most of the ride, until it broke up when the pace picked up on the hills. But what a shame we as a club can`t get a better turn out for are own Chaingang.

Maybe people are allergic to riding their bikes on any other day than a Saturday. :D

They're a great way to train but unfortunately I can never really get to them. The ACC and DP ones all don't really fit in to the times I can be at the locations as part of my commute. I did the ACC one (well got dropped by Paul and co quite quickly  ) a couple of times last year (I think, maybe the year before) but it was a struggle to get there. And then I'm on a commuting bike with a pannier to haul around, no chance to get home first.

I suspect quite a few who would be interested are in the same boat if they work in the City.

It would help if some of us were told where the meeting place at Elmers End is and perhaps a brief description of the route so the slower ones know roughly where they are going. I think I may have asked but didn't get a response so I trundled off to CSS on the off chance somebody else might turn up. Which they didn't. I ended going around Titsey Hill and Oxted.

Lee, Elmers End is where Dulwich Paragon meet every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday evening for a chaingang with Wednesday being the slowest.
It's well established so you're always guaranteed a few people down there - straight out on to the A21, turn round at the bottom of Pol Hill then back again. Next Thursday there'll be a few of us at CSS doing our own thing by sound of it so you wont be alone this time.

Thanks Edo. Call me pernikerty but where abouts in Elmers End do you meet?. I don't want to stand outside Tesco when i should be at the triangle. Also Wednesday is awkward for me to get out so it would have to be Tuesday. I know this is the quick one but if I know the route I can go at my own pace. So my next question is:- what route do you take to get to the A21 ? and when at Pol Hill, is it the roundabout adjacent to the M25 that you turn around? If you could furnish me with the details I would be grateful and promise never to ask for so much information in one sitting ever again.
I don't wish to be a pain in the rear but , as my wife often tells me , I could make an occupation out of it .

Lee no problem mate, they meet at Elmers end roundabout where the green is.
They head towards Keston from West Wickham and Coney hall then turn right onto the A21 at Chapter two restuarant going past Farnborough hospital. The Roundabout they turn around at is adjacent to the M25 at the bottom of Pol Hill.
If you struggle with the pace of Thursday night ones at CSS I wouldn't recommmend trying the Tuesday DP elmers end run as it is slightly tougher.
If you wanna keep up for a few miles then turn back fine but the A21 on your own really isn't that much fun. I would have another go Thursday night at CSS this week. Maybe we can organise a second group that goes a bit easier. I'm sure there's enough people thinking of a midweek spin.

Rob, ACC is essentially all about the saturday club run. End of! Club's half of our size have two and sometimes three official club runs per week and we don't. So it's not too suprising that given we only have a handful of regular RR's and TT's (hence not many competitive peeps) that the chaingangs aren't that popular. Of course, there are other reasons but for me thats the main one.

Err, it was supposed to be a B team chaingang but I think we also need a C standard chaingang - well I do for now  Though it is fun seeing how long I can hang for on the supposedly B ride - unless someone decides to really crank it up to an A standard chaingang at least

Should be up for Thursday as I'm not out otherwise this week

My excuse for this Thursday is that I'm going bowling. Which after today I feel may be more my sort of sport (guilted into going to a work morale/bonding thing - I have to put up with those idiots all day every day).

Anyway, I do want to do more stuff and riding with a group stops me from slacking. But as Amy says, you need to define what the standard is - is B standard supposed to be something that an 18s rider can cope with?

But ultimately it is about lazy people like me hauling their @rses out there and actually doing it.
