London Marathon 2011 Finished

I know all this training business makes us sound a bit serious but, well, some people really are into this bike lark so feel free to talk about all training & self improvement related topics in here

Ten days since my last post so a quick summary of week 7 plus a bit of 8 from the 16 week VLM plan. :D

Week 7
Tues 8th 20 x 200m with 2mins rest after each.
Wed 9th Ran home from work. Managed only 8miles @ 8m/m as I felt knackered from the previous day's effort so picked up the rattler from Herne Hill for the last 4miles.
Thu 10th - 12th Feb - Rest just commuting on the bike to work. Trying to ride easy and resist temptation to race other cyclists who are trying to jump you. Fair game I suppose.

Sunday 13th Feb - Sidcup 10m
Fast course if on the boring side.
Finished in 66.27 which works out under 6.40m/m pace. 3mins 19secs fast than 2009 time so fairly happy with the PB but was hoping to go under 65.
I had no watch to keep my pace in check and went out hard (first 3miles in 18.40 parkrun pb territory). Suffered a thigh strain on the last lap so was just glad to finish. Immediately after I couldn't bend my leg. Now I can't remember which one it was. :D
Punching this time into the mcmillan calculator tells me I'm on for 3.06. .... but parkrun time says 3.16.

Ajay, I must have missed you afterwards.

Week 8
Mon 14th - 5m easy 8m/m lunchtime effort.
Tues 15th - Track session at Ladywell. 1k efforts with rests. 7 in total. First time I've ever run on the track and much better than pavement. Well organised will do this again regardless of what I'm training for.
Wed 16th - Ran home 13miles dead @ 8m/m pace plus a toilet stop  Sylv you're right about feeling the slowness after cycling for years on the same route. Felt much better after the stop and running without the rucksack helps.

Looking forward to getting out on a chaingang or clubrun soon.

Cheers

At the moment I'll try for sub 3.15. I think I can go under 3.10 but not so sure about sub three hours.
That's about 6.50m/m pace. If the training goes well for the 3-4 weeks then yeah maybe can think about sub three hours.

Woke up with a stinker of a cold today. What a nightmare.
Have fun down at Brighton. 20mile slow run for me :o

Suffered like a dog in the sun for the last 5miles in the sun. I wasn't the only one.
Still very good day. I'll post up a report when I get a chance in the week.
Off out to find a local buffet all you can eat place.

Cheers

Congratulations ED, that brilliant. You were very consistent up to the 22nd mile. I can't imaging how painful those last five miles must have been.

My congratulations too, Ed. Sorry I've only just hit on this post, I don't visit the 'Training' string often now!

My three London Maras were in the late 1980s, when I was in my mid-50s. I actually enjoyed them! That was before I returned to the cycling fold. As Andrew mentions, I was with Blackheath Harriers. Good stretching Wednesday groups runs helped a lot. As did a training schedule prepared for me by my coach Simon. If you do London again next year you're welcome to said schedule, if I can unearth it. It meant training six days a week, though (I was then temporarily 'resting' from actual work) , Simon compiled it for me based on my optimistic target, to beat 3hr 15 min.It mixed long distance runs with fast Fartlek-style 8-10 milers. I did 3-8-28 second go (first was a 3hr 13min) I would not have wanted to have mixed the running with cycling though, so I am well impressed with your 3-24. No such things as Garmins then, but I recollect that my graveyard running slot was through Docklands, about 17 to 21 miles; yours seems to have been in final miles.

Give it another go in Olympic Year!

Thanks for the response Roy (and of course everyone else). The garmin data tells the story but I did write a report too.

...and those times are pretty impressive so I'm keen to gain from any information you can give.
I should be out this Saturday.
There's always someone at the club I can learn from whether it be cycling, running....brilliant.

Cheers.
