Training with a cold?

I know all this training business makes us sound a bit serious but, well, some people really are into this bike lark so feel free to talk about all training & self improvement related topics in here

Training with a cold?

Postby tel » Mon Dec 13, 2010 10:30 am

Went out on Sat for a training ride although I had a streaming head cold-felt ok and enjoyed the ride.Thought I`d got away with it but felt like sh1t yesterday. But feeling a bit better today.

The question is do I do an hour or so on the rollers or give it a miss till I`m feeling much better. Don`t want a chest infection.

Training with a cold is ok, but In my experience its best to avoid going too ''deep''. If you do you will increase the chance of the cold developing to the chest. But yeah, by all means go out, wear as many clothes as you can manage, to a certain extent the ''sweat it out'' mantra holds. So get out, take it easy, wrap up warm and it'll be alright. Enjoy you're ride...

Joel Friel's Triathlon Bible basically says if its above your neck (runny nose, sneezing, scratchy throat) then train but start with a reduced intensity, and shorter duration. And stop if you feel worse. If its below the neck (chills, fever, chest cold) then don't train.

Sounds like good advice to me, but I can't say I've always followed it! Joel Friel probably wouldn't have let me out the door a few times last week, as I coughed my way up and down the pool, round the woods and generated enough heat and snot to melt the snow around my turbo!

Er..give it a miss mate. Wait till your recovered or you may live to regret it.
