Box Hill - what's an achieveable benchmark time?

I know all this training business makes us sound a bit serious but, well, some people really are into this bike lark so feel free to talk about all training & self improvement related topics in here

Box Hill - what's an achieveable benchmark time?

Postby Dan_K » Sun Jan 16, 2011 2:54 pm

As the title suggests. What's good to aim for?
My level is probably around an 18's group/B team chain gang.

Have never bothered timing it before. First effort of 2011 today was 10m04s.

Nick,

Will you be updating this for 2011? I see from Mapmyride

http://www.mapmyride.com/ride/united-ki ... 3654220505

that it is 2.51 km and 131m of climbing.

Haven't done it for ages. Last time was 7:34 but I think I should be faster now. Tempted to try it on the fixie - a comfortable cadence works out to around 15mph.

Worth recording club times here? Tom's best is 14'10" but I reckon he can go a fair bit faster than that.

You may well be aware but there's an official CTT course GS/281 of 12 miles which takes in the Zig Zag.
Bec run a club come and try it event on it. http://www.beccyclingclub.co.uk/event-Club_TT.html. Kingston Pheonix run a club hilly TT on it as well.

Course details:

Proceed south-westwards to T junction with B2209 (near Mickleham).
LEFT and take next LEFT up the Zig-Zag of Box Hill to junction with B2033.
LEFT (care) onto B2003 past HQ but straight on (leaving B2033) at Headley Common.
Proceed through Headley to junction with Clay Lane. LEFT fork into Clay Lane and continue to A24 Leatherhead By-Pass were left (CARE) to next RBT (Beaverbrook) were LEFT into B2033 to
FINISH at oak tree on left side of road, 43 yards before Give Way sign and 125 yards before Headley Common Road.

Cheers for the heads-up Andrew.....

I see the pros will be visiting Box Hill as part of the olympic road race. Should be good to watch some live action.

Toks, top 8. Easy! I've got new wheels now so there's no stopping me

The 2 I mention are club events Dan so if you want to have a ride then contact the club the week before and ask if you can get one. Normally there won't be a problem and you'll be welcome, only if they fill the number of spots they asked for then as a club TT their riders will have preferance to you. That's how it works normally, don't know if come and try it events are different but doubt they'll over subscribe anyway.

Didn't you time yourself on the off-road course once Nick?

A parallel road vs off-road race would be good fun.

I think it's about 1.3km off-road, so assuming 13km/h do it in 6 min it could be a pretty close one.

Just looking at the book 100 Greatest Cycling Climbs. It gives an approx climb time as 7 mins for Boxhill. I'm not sure what my climb time is, be interesting to know.
Does anyone know what the gradient of White Hill, the climb from Bletchingley to Caterham?

Lucy.
