Achilles tendonitis and Speedplay pedals

I know all this training business makes us sound a bit serious but, well, some people really are into this bike lark so feel free to talk about all training & self improvement related topics in here

Achilles tendonitis and Speedplay pedals

Postby Toks » Tue Apr 26, 2011 9:44 pm

Hi, I may have mentioned that I've only trained/ridden perhaps 4 or 5 times since October 2010 because of ankle/Achilles pain. It appeared to have finally cleared up so I got the bike out yesterday and today and rode at a fairly sedate 15-16mph for around 90mins. Anyways the pain is back again. Grr!!. I have lowered the saddle, stretched calves, iced Achilles, move cleats right back etc etc. In desperation I did an Internet search and found quite a few links where triathletes and cyclists had similar problems with Speed plays. Most pointed to the fact your foot over pronates and rocks which brings about the AT and ankle pain. Now I've always loved speed plays and I've ridden them for five years without a problem, so why now?? -. Anyway I'm gonna switch to a more secure pedal system and have another bike fit and see what happens. Cheers :-(

Well I was out of action since may 2010 body finally gave up on me and refused to allow me to cycle pain free. I could barely ride for 15mins. After spending money on a retul fit just to double check position, then seeing a phsyio through my company insurance 1 month later I was no better.

I swapped physio and went to see Balance Performance in Clapham who have helped me back to ridng the bike this took until Jan 2011 when I started to see progress. Now I was lucky my insurance covered my physio bill (£90 per 1 hour) but I initially did the same as you reseraching on the web to find out answers I just got frustrated as my postion or equipment hadnt changed.

Dont take this persoanl Toks but I get the impression you dont like spending cash, actually lots of people dont like spending money on their body but dont mind buying parts for their bike. I suggest you see a phsyio who is cycling orientated and they can look at your body as whole package and watch you ride on the bike.

Cheers Rob

P.s what sypmtoms did i have? Burning quads, sore qauds,IT band pain, stiif throaic spine, pin and needles in hands, feet and inner part of quads.

I also ride Speedplay pedals and founds both sets of pedals had lateral rock. Each pedal had 15,000 miles. I could rock the shoe and touch the pedal spindle. By replacing the pedlas for a new set I got rid of my soreness on the outside of teh quad near the knee. Nothing last for ever parts have to be replaced. Speeplay in the US told me they see this where people have a varus foot and adding a shim to sort out this issue and reduce waer on the pedal. You will still wear out a pedal if your biomechanics is not right.

If nothing in you (incl kit/shoes), the bike, or the way you rode changed then could it simply be something as simple as wearing out the pedals resulting in too much play? Not noticable but tiny bits of extra movement all the time having a cumulative effect. Did you try replacing or a thorough servicing and rebuild of any bits which need replacing. As a simple measure stick a pair of flat pedals on and ride in trainers and see if you have the same issue.

Hey Rob, where you been? :D Anyway you and Andrew are both correct, and I perhaps waited a tad too long before changing the last pair of speed plays.(it was never a problem before? ) I did however change them in September 2010 (bought titanium speed plays) but perhaps the damage was already done. Even new Speedplays still have this gentle rocking action and that appears to be enough to inflame my fragile left ankle/AT. Re spending money Rob I had a cycle fit and follow up back in 2007/8. I'm happy to have another fit again. The only thing I haven't spent money on that would help my fitness (assuming I'm pain free) is a 'powermeter'. If that makes me tight, fair enough. An average 3rd cat racer like me will still have to ride the bike a hell of a lot to get 'really' good and I don't quite have enough motivation to do that. Sorry to hear you've been out of action since May 2010. Are you now cycling pain free?

This can be caused in running by the back of the heal rubbing against the achilles.

Maybe your shoes are like you - too tight?

The problem is identified in this link http://www.epdoc.com/mvv/speedplay/index.html
Once I'm pain free again  I'll need to purchase a new set. Anyone got any views on these pedals

I've always used Look pedals, still use delta rather than keos but that's down to the fact I'd have to replace 5 sets of pedals which would be a bit costly particularly as what I have work well.
I think shimano ones are similar to deltas but could be wrong.

I have the Look ones in that picture and can vouch for them! I have only ever had Look though, so can't give you a comparison! :)

I've always used Shimano pedals.

I find they are the most solid feeling and the cleats last a v long time.

Cleats are not as slippery as keo's to walk around in off the bike.

Cavendish & Wiggins use them
