Elite Training

I know all this training business makes us sound a bit serious but, well, some people really are into this bike lark so feel free to talk about all training & self improvement related topics in here

Elite Training

Postby Matt W » Tue Sep 11, 2012 7:24 pm

I am a fourteen year old who would love to become a professional track sprinter (if you don't know yet! :D ). I want to ultimately compete in the Olympic's... hopefully the Olympics in Rio 2016.
My P.E. teacher has been helping me with some training in the gym. I started out with doing squats with a bar, and today I was doing 70kg squats. I want to be at an elite level and my teacher said he can help me with that, but only in the gym. But first he needs to know what elite track cyclists (sprint) are doing in the gym so he can work that around me... does anyone know what they do??? I can't find anything on the internet!
So basically my questions are...

What do elite sprint cyclists do in the gym, and
What should I be doing outside of the gym??

I would be so pleased if anyone could help me,
Thanks, Matt

Thanks, unfortunately I have already tried asking them. I've even been going to the advanced holiday training sessions during the holidays. I can't seem to get anywhere with training now :|

Can't help with the specific question about gym training, but if you're serious about that ambition you should be looking to get on the BC Olympic Talent Team.

Haha, funnily enough iv'e already tried that too. They pick you depending on how well you do in international races and so on. Well I hadn't done any races so I couldn't even apply :(

Thanks anyway

Hey Matt why don't you come along and do the presidents 10 mile TT near Dorking this Saturday morning.

Bradley Wiggins used to do these all the time when he was younger.

Is it in the morning? What time because I have to be back by 12:00? I was down for it, but I ended up having to do work in the afternoon (I work in rolling on cycles) :(

Bradley Wiggins was an endurance track rider. If you want to be a sprinter, I would avoid doing much aerobic training as this can affect your top end.

You really need to join a track squad at Herne Hill or elsewhere and train with like minded individuals.

Good luck

First off is 10:01. I would imagine that Jon will have put you near the start - PM him and you may be able to get moved up. So you'll be back at Holmwood before 11:00 anyway.
