10 Mile TT on rollers

I know all this training business makes us sound a bit serious but, well, some people really are into this bike lark so feel free to talk about all training & self improvement related topics in here

10 Mile TT on rollers

Postby Matt W » Wed Nov 07, 2012 9:11 am

Hi all,

The other day I did a 10 mile TT on my rollers. I got a time of 20mins 38seconds. Avg 29.8 mph. Top 38.7 mph. Is this good for on the rollers? I know there's no wind resistance but I had heard people tell me it is pretty equal because of the resistance and no free wheeling etc. I am trying to get some advice and see where I am at in terms of how well i'm doing.

Thanks for any replys,
Matt W

P.S.
I'm 14 years old

It about as equal as me in a sprint with a certain Mr Cavendish.

You should be able to answer your own question really. Can you hold 29mph on the road for 20 mins?.....thought not. Times, speed etc mean nothing on rollers.

Rollers are great for cadence drills and core strength but will do very little for leg strength unless they have any kind resistance system fitted to them. Get yourself a turbo trainer if you haven't already. That's closest you'll get to the kind of workout you'll get from riding on the road.

Cheers

I was thinking about getting some rollers with resistance:
a) so I could take them to TTs for a proper warmup without having to change wheels for the turbo
b) because the turbo is soooo dull

However an option for winter training that we tried out tonight was Huw's session at Cyclopark. 7:00 - 8:30 Wednesdays (except the 2nd Wednesday of the month). Was certainly a workout although the mix of abilities can cause "issues".
Please note that Cyclopark will be starting race training sessions on a
Wednesday evening this week 29th August. The session will start at 7.00pm
sharp and will be led by a Level 3 road specific coach. The cost of the
session is £5.00 per rider. The session is aimed at adults and as it’s the
first week we will build future sessions around turnout and ability.

With night drawing in it is an ideal opportunity to get this session going
so that we can get it established and in the diary to use the floodlights
later in the year.

Hope to see you here

(Sorry for the threadjacking Matt)

Marcus: Huw mentioned the sessions to be on the dreaded Facebook. It's largely as Keith said but they cope with the kids as well. A lot of the drills are "as hard as you can go" so it's not like you're constantly going round with one bunch that's too fast/too slow for you. The only issues I had was with interval sprints where a couple of times I ran up behind slower people (yes, they do exist) and attempting to gasp "ON YOUR RIGHT" failed and I had to back off.

It's not on next week but back again the week after.

My legs are pretty dead today but I'm resting. Tom's doing cross-country club after school

Does one need to have a BC membership to join Uncle Huw's punishment class?

CBA? :)

Back to OP, I don't have rollers so can't compare with how they relate to x/y/z. However based on your time I would say that they are nowhere near comparable to a proper TT, but then nothing is the same as a race in the real world. Road surface, gradients, wind speed and direction etc etc etc etc.

The closest they could relate to would be the track in a low rolling resistance and no wind/gradient type way. However as your 10 back-to back 3 times would create a new hour record then I'd say that rollers don't compare to that either. Or if you did that time for a 10 then you'd be in a tooth and nail battle with George for the trophies, getting top 10 placing in Opens and one of the best juvenilles in the country.

I'm not trying to knock, far from it, well done and keep going with the training, but I would avoid trying to compare apples and oranges and use your training to compare apples and apples. For example you could use this 10 mile TT on rollers as a base and re-test yourself with it at set intervals, say every 4 weeks, to monitor your progress.

Thanks for the feedback. I'm going to try and do a TT on the road to see where i'm at but I don't know the best place to do it.
If anyone could give any suggestions then that would be brilliant! :D

You could try the Horne / Newchapel circuit. Pretty quiet roads. Redhill CC use it for some of their summer club TTs, so that would give you some times to compare against. 3 laps starting from the entrance to the golf club.

You can make it into a full 10 using the GS10/39 course as ridden by East Grinstead CC.

If you are going to time yourself on a course it doesn't matter but if you want to do an official one then you'll struggle to find one out of season, if you do then contact the club first to check it is okay and you'd have to take a parent or guardian to sign a consent form as you are under 18.
