LBP test for a glycogen depleted athlete

I know all this training business makes us sound a bit serious but, well, some people really are into this bike lark so feel free to talk about all training & self improvement related topics in here

LBP test for a glycogen depleted athlete

Postby Robh » Sat Aug 16, 2008 10:06 am

At the FaCT Education training camp we had a 30 year old athlete who's been riding for a year who had ridden very hard over the first two days of the camp, in an attempt to "train" with the lead group. His LBP test failed when his glycogen stores were completely depleted, which meant he was never able to create lactate to show LBP at the end of the test...This was confirmed by forcing him to do a 90 second all out effort, which yielded a lactate reading of 1.1 (clearly showing the athlete the result of his glycogen depletion).

I didn't do the test on the athlete but my room mate from Denmark did. I was close by testing someone else but I remember hearing the athlete saying he was feeling very tired and as you can see he had a perceived effort of 2 @ HR 106 then this just to a perceived effort of 6 for HR 127. He was tested 2 hrs after his 3hr ride in the morning with the lead group.

Here's his file attached :-

There was another athlete who had a similar experience, where fighting to keep up with the "younger" riders had left him so fatigued he was unable to complete the step test. We ended his session early, and suggested two days of rest, after which we repeated his test. He had refused to take complete rest (being at a training camp meant he was not totally ready to listen to us), and his LBP showed significantly low results LBP=115. On his return to Canada, and after two weeks of mixed riding and more rest, he was retested with LBP=145...he felt much better.

His files LBP = 115 file
