Why do zone training on the club run?????

I know all this training business makes us sound a bit serious but, well, some people really are into this bike lark so feel free to talk about all training & self improvement related topics in here

Toks/Marek
I'm writing for myself only here
I ride a minimum of 12h a week, of which 80% is commuting
I've done the one-dimension, always ride fast approach for at least the last 5 years
I've had some degree of success in racing but can't say I've made big noticeable improvements in that time
In my case it's fairly obvious there is something else to be done, the fact that someone who doesn't know me in Canada could deduct this just looking at my test result just demonstrates that black on white
I'm currently using my commuting miles as LBP-20 / breathing technique training and enjoying every minute of it (1h45 this morning in sunny London), but would agree that using the clubrun for this is less than ideal (that's when the remaining 20% might come into play  )
For me the LBP-20 will only be one component of a more structured global approach to training, a thing that I've never really done before
I am looking forward to next season already and to see how me and the other ACC racers will be doing throughout their different training methods
We're gonna have a ball in team ACC I can tell you :)

Ps I tell you back in around 2002 (and especially when I was doing only mtb) it felt like I was the only one doing any racing in the club. I wasn't really reading the road/TT reports and results but even those were not plentiful. I'm amazed at what (part of) the club has become on this side, with people motivated to train and get better and better results. Whatever method they use, it's all good in the end.

Hey Sylv glad you've joined the debate :D I for one am not advocating that people ride fast all the time. As I've said quite a few times that would just as bad as riding slowly all the time.[quote]I've had some degree of success in racing but can't say I've made big noticeable improvements in that time

I've only been aware of you competitively since 2005/2006 and you clearly have made steady improvements each year. You were one of the strongest RR in the 2006/2007 season pehaps you overtrained a little bit last year.

As you've admitted you haven't really done any structured training before so its easy to dismiss what you did in the past despite the gains you made. Interestingly enough though you still made it to be one of the strongest riders in the club with that approach. When I asked what happened to you racing wise this year you said you overtrained. So to quote you "something needed to be done" that mean't slowing down for a good percentage of your rides. Truth be told, like Stu you knew that yourself. Adam, myself and Huw could've told you that months ago mate. In fact the lynch pins of the "fast and hard only apprach " (George, Stu and yourself) all suffered with major fatigue or illness during the season :(

With 12 hours weekly training time thats a lot more than most so you definitly need to monitor your 'fast and steady rides' so that mix is correct. And all this must be offset against real world stress (work family, fatigue) etc. Guys who want to be comptitive in the club and have only one true ride per week. Should come at this thing completley differently in my humble opinion :D

If you are talking about Andrew Sellars, he was wrong. Juerg had a different opinion.

I would say you need to work out your 60min, 30min, 5min and 1min power output levels to find out where you are and what can be improved.

[quote]Would a 40-40-20 theory not make more sense

That sounds reasonable but would vary from one rider to another depending on what their strengths and weaknesses are.

I am doing my zone training on the club run because it's the only time I have to be sociable. All the other trianing on the bike is on me billy-own! So it's nice to have a chat when I can.

So no one needs to improve their abilities at riding in a bunch then. Funny that.

I know this is the 'Training' forum, but lets be serious, training is about more than just physical fitness.

Some of the riding I see on the club run is quite frankly dangeous.

[quote]4. You ain't got the training time, probably never will have, so cut to the chase and stop faffing around

[Normal sized letters, I didn't think there was a need to shout].
Who says? Some people do have more time to train, and just because training isn't done one way doesn't mean that all you are doing is "faffing around".
I'd recommend re-reading Marky Mark's excellent post earlier in the thread. Different types and methods of training work for different people, for different goals, and with different circumstances.

Hi all, Thaks for all your kind words in public and private. This club is to die for, full of some real quality people. I second what Andrew is trying to say.

It is after all called the Addiscombe Cycling Club and not the Addiscombe Racing Club. The banter and comedy makes this forum as well as a place to answer ANY question.

It's all got a bit heavy lately and Marco done the right thing an a level headed way, I will now be calling him dad.

I think we forgot to mention the LBP sprint last Saturday on the way to Charlwood village, I'm sure you'd laugh too much if I told you.
