This Time Last Year - Better or Worse?

I know all this training business makes us sound a bit serious but, well, some people really are into this bike lark so feel free to talk about all training & self improvement related topics in here

This Time Last Year - Better or Worse?

Postby Toks » Fri Jan 16, 2009 12:22 pm

Well after nearly four weeks completely off the bike I'm feeling distinctly unfit so compared with this time last year I feel WORSE ! I did nearly 50 miles yesterday and bonked badly at the end -  Nevermind I love a challenge - Lets hope Bletchingly on April 4th doesn't comearound too quickly  . Here I/we go again but rather slowly at this point :D

Great stuff Marco, glad to hear it. Maybe late in the summer you'll be able to challenge you're own BMX 10mile TT record. My brothers left me with a pretty decent machine which lies in my Cellar so maybe I'll bring it down to Holmwood and give you a run for ya money

Dude! Why 4 weeks off?

A lot stronger, and more importantly wiser, myself.

I was in Nigeria for three weeks. I saw this geezer on a dodgy looking hybrid in this remote village outside Lagos (big city) and I desperately wanted to give him some money and loan his bike for a few hours. Unfortunately at the time I was in a nicely air conditioned Jeep and my cousin wasn't willing to wait around for me to do some bike training nonsense. I did run for 30 minutes once, though. :D

Definitely better, although it's not really showing just yet.. This time last year i was in between houses and renting a room off of a mate, and there was no consitency in my riding until about April once i'd moved and done most of the decorating

This year i'm riding consistently and everything's going according to schedule, i just keep reminding myself there's no need to rush it, the big races in the summer are a long way off yet :D

Erm do I need to answer this

I think I have improved in the last year quite a bit. This time last year I was getting spat out of the back by the 18's. Now I'll stick with the training group, go on the chain gang on a weds night, go head to head with anyone for a sprint and quite happily enter races with a bit more confidence. Not bad for one ride a week and no coaching or specific training, all I've done is ride my bike and loved doing so.

Quite pleased with my first full year of cycling.

Back to the question.

Better or Worse? I think I can only really answer that in a few months time when the effect of training can be demonstrated (or not! )

Looking back at my diary I'm riding more this year (despite the weather), and I'm still loving being on my bike. Guess that's better then. :D

A lot better...
which is normal as last year was the first full year of back to cycling... :D
I actually started training (riding don't expect anything too fancy and tiring) in October last year and am just shy of 1000 km...
last year I got to the 1k mark at 18 April
so whatever it is... it can't be worse....

You're far too modest Keith. Would you have bagged that result from boxing day (2008) a year before? You got in ahead of a few decent 2nd cats there and I'm sure its not just a one off :D :D

oh, look its Felix English from CP 1st again.

Anyway, I think I am at about the same level of 'fitness' as this time last year, as this time last year I was ill! Did the extended (dual carriageway and box hill) club run on my own on Saturday and went up box hill at around 16-17 KPH, so some room for improvement! I need to up that to 24-25kph to be competitive at CP.
