Fixed bike gearing for the Saturday Ride?

I know all this training business makes us sound a bit serious but, well, some people really are into this bike lark so feel free to talk about all training & self improvement related topics in here

Fixed bike gearing for the Saturday Ride?

Postby BrendanM » Wed Feb 04, 2004 12:44 am

What gear ratio should I use for a single speed road bike if I want to ride to Charlwood in the 17 MPH group on Saturdays?

I have an old hack bike with horizontal rear dropouts. Initially I might use one cog of a 7 speed cassette on a freehub and no derailleur to give me a single speeder.

If I find the gearing is unsuitable, I can change it to a different cog when I get to the Cafe.

I've ridden with the 17mph group and stayed in the small ring 39/15 (approx 70 inch gear) the whole time without any problems. However if you plan to do the 'thru and off' on the dual carriage way you'll need a bigger gear (at least 75inch) or else you'll have to spin at 125 rpms plus.
