Boxhill TT Challenge Kingston Wheelers times

I know all this training business makes us sound a bit serious but, well, some people really are into this bike lark so feel free to talk about all training & self improvement related topics in here

[quote="nick de meyer"]have you timed yourself recently, surely with those times you would do well in a surrey league?

Maybe.

I persoanlly don't need a race number on my back to be motivated to ride. Riding on my own or with others at a leisurely pace is enough for me.

I'm struggling to find a suitable date for a club hillclimb competition, as it's a busy time of the year.
1st weekend in Sept is our Open 10, and SCCU 25.
2nd weekend in Sept is the President's 10.
3rd weekend in Sept is Isle of Wight trip.
4th weekend in Sept the Surrey Legs of Steel ride uses Ranmore on Saturday (which is why we had to cancel the HC last year), but we could run it on Sunday or use another hill (Titsey White Lane?) on Saturday.
After that, the 1st weekend in October the Open HC's start with Kingston Wheelers & Wigmore, then the 2nd weekend it's the Brightom Mitre, Catford & Bec events.

Bit of a bugger Jon, I seem to remember you had the same problem last year. My memory may be letting me down but did you mention switching the date, probably next year, for another time? Out of traditional hill climb season but as it's a club event it's of less importance on the timing.

Ranmore's handy as it's near the CR so I think it gets more people doing it than on another hill, although White Lane would get a vote from me, if only from a selfish location point of view.

If it can't be fitted in could we have an unofficial champion by taking the best club performance in one of the Opens, the Bec making most sense? Form, slightly higher cost of entry etc issues but...

That was pretty impressive time and power output Rob. Did you do 5 x 5's as training for it?

Who's the man to talk to re a hill climb?

I have been approached by the committe that arranges The Caterham Festival which is a month long series of events which include art shows, street party, carnival, open gardens etc etc. I sufggested to them a Hill Climb within the month of June 2010. If anyone knows Caterham I thought maybe it could be run up Waller Lane. Who's best for me to talk to and see if this idea could fly?

Regards

Jon Hemming is the TT Sec and Paul Tunnell the Gen Sec of Addiscombe. Don't know if it should be run by them first as the opportunity to run an Addiscombe Hill Climb on it. PR for Addiscombe rather than Surrey League etc, or do it as an Addiscombe promoted SL race.

Plenty of decisions to be made I expect but Jon and Paul would be a good starting point. Committee meeting tonight so it could be discussed there if any time in AOB.

Yes as it was the only form of high intensity riding I did in 2007 seeing as I don't race.

Scott, I'm assuming that as the hill-climb you're proposing will be part of the local festival then it needs to be spectator-friendly and also be open to anyone to turn up and have a go. I see 3 ways of running it:
1) Run it as a club event under CTT rules and classify it as a "come and try it" event.
2) Run it under BC rules and have people take out a BC day license.
3) Run it under no particular rules at all as a fun event run by the festival.

If it was run as a CTT event then the course would have to have a risk assessment and be approved by the CTT district committee, and I doubt whether using an urban road open to traffic would get approval. Probably a similar situation with BC/SL. If, however, the road was closed to traffic for the event then this would be a different kettle of fish. This would need the cooperation of the local council and police, but the festival organisers may have those links and be able to pull a few strings. I think floating the idea of getting a road closure for the event would be the first step to take with the festival organisers; I don't think it will be feasible without it.

This lane is not open to general traffic just access to the two or three houses on it. Its more of a pedestrian lane. I am pretty sure my friends on the committe will be able to get a temp closure and the agreeance of the few residents. I'll speak to the Chairman and get him to run it by local authorities before reporting back and we can go from there.

Cheers

Hi Scott, we've met up on the commute back to Caterham a couple of times, hopefully you remember me. I think Waller Lane is a great idea, that's quite a little beast, normally avoided by myself for an easier route round :D I'll see you there, hope the set-up goes smoothly.

i can work out the length and average gradient of the boxhill climb on my ergomo, and the amount of meters climbed. its about 150m but i'll double check this.
is there a website to work out VAM? would VAM work as isn't this worked out as vertical metres climbed per hour?

watts per kg can be worked out by the average power you pushed up the climb, plus the weight of your bike and your bodyweight

i'm putting up 4 hilly TT challenges on my website www.sound-coaching.co.uk this week, to include boxhill on road and xc on a mtb (chalk path), and also leith hill from where the road starts going up at the turn in dorking, up to the pub at coldharbour (name tbc) and also off road on mtb from the bayleaf restaurant in westcott to the leith hill tower. Nirvana say this can be done in under 30 minutes. i will get more info from them on the record

the routes will also be posted on my website

so for now i've listed kingston wheelers boxhill TT times, i have a couple of ACC times, steve bayliss has been emailed for his time up boxhill, and once i have some more ACC times (please pm me your time asap) which has to be for 2009, then i'll add them on to the web
lets see if we are top up boxhill!! let the competition begin!!

If anyone fancies it, I'm going to be heading for Box to have a go tomorrow, probably around 10.30am. You can borrow my rear Powertap wheel if you want to measure your power output (Shimano 10s 12-25)

do you reckon out of the saddle is the way to go?
