I know all this training business makes us sound a bit serious but, well, some people really are into this bike lark so feel free to talk about all training & self improvement related topics in here

[quote="Sylv"]do you reckon out of the saddle is the way to go?

Short answer - yes.

How silly of me not to have realised earlier too, especially as we have raced against each other that way here in the past. Fresh legs seem to make a difference too, as does a light bike. So I took it very easy on the 23km ride to Box, doing a few sprints to get the heart rate going as I was approaching. Ditched the bottle and various kit in a ... ditch, but resisted getting rid of the helmet - those things aren't cheap. I know you only get one proper shot at this per session so was a bit anxious at finding halfway through the climb that I couldn't sustain an out of the saddle effort and having to restart, so tried a 10m section at the steepest part in 53 x 23 and it was fine. Got going and was feeling really good, felt like I was flying in fact. I looked down and I was doing 30 where it usually shows around 25! My big worry was now blowing out, but the first hairpin came quicker than expected. Kept going still feeling good and I knew I was in for a belter. After the second hairpin I began to suffer a bit, I had to crouch down as could really feel the airflow, I couldn't wait for the last turn (dead Stu man's curve) and that final push. God that felt good to pass that imaginary line under the bemused look of the ice-cream eaters!

a few months back i was doing reps up there 6reps at about an ave of 470watts and between 5.10 and 5.25mins each time.
im 90kg and can hold over 500watts for 5mins so could go a bit quicker if i wasnt going for more than 1 rep

Well I'm 30s faster than five days ago so it's worth another shot ..
[quote]Have you been starving yourself ?
Yes
[quote]Is that your highest 5 minute wattage
Yes 386w, previous was up Vinaigrette with Paul in May
[quote]do you thing there is a little more in the tank ?
I think I can get under 5"30 with specific training, also I was smiling from halfway whereas I should have been putting myself deep in the red.

Toks, the 300w club is just a nice name, I'm <58 you >71 you do the math.

fantastic time sylv!! my time was mostly out the saddle but not all the way up, i can go faster than 6:45 i know!
ben i think you should go for the record, on bike radar its 5:08 i reckon if you just do 1 rep instead of pacing for 6 you'll smash that time, maybe even sub 5 mins!!! what do you reckon?? i can't find anything faster than 5:08 at the moment. the gauntlet has been thrown down!!

58kg-382w (6.62w/kg) - 5"38
90kg-470w (5.22w/kg) -5"25 (max)
Something's not right in your figures Ben? I'm sure your times are correct but are you really 90kg?
Or were you on your tt bike and full kit and it did make that much of a difference?

Re pacing based on watts- very hard up a hill especially out of the saddle, i'll try!

number are right its down to pacing, you spent alot of time below your ave i didnt.
if i can find it ill post a srm file of some testing i did in majorca up sa calobra, alternating between sprinting from the start and then repeating at the ave of that run. i did 6 runs back to back so 3 flat out from start and 3 at the ave power, each time the ave power run was about 2 mins quicker

i can still get up hill faster than a guy with a better watts per kilo than me, its not just power but how you use it that makes the difference and thats not just going up a hill.
