Ride with a difference
I am inviting you to come with me on a river cycle ride to Waltham Abbey.
Meeting East Croydon Station, 08.30.am Sunday 2nd November – prompt departure
The ride is about 55 miles and goes North via minor roads and cycle paths and passing by Pool River, Ladywell, Deptford crossing the Thames via the Greenwich foot tunnel in front of the Cutty Sark then onwards near or on the Thames Path to Trinity Buoy Wharf stopping here for breakfast.
We then head through a factory estate where we pick up the Lee River towpath near the Olympic Park. Onwards to Hackney Marshes, Tottenham Marshes, Pickett's Lock etc. as far as Waltham Abbey for lunch. Most of this is flat well made gritty towpaths with occasional cobbles. We return firstly via the same route but then heading South through Stamford Hill, Hoxton and Shoreditch, crossing the river at Southwark Bridge then home via Camberwell, Dulwich, Gypsy Hill etc.
This is longish ride; it will take all day as we may only average 10mph – We'll need to press on so in case of punctures it will be best to split the group and proceed – having the ride downloaded on a Garmin or smart phone map will be an advantage. I recommend sturdy road bike, hybrid or mountain bike with slick tyres. Bring lights (sunset is 4.32pm) and a bell.
It would be useful to have provisional numbers because I need to call ahead to the cafes so please respond and keep in touch in case of changes.
This is a drop box address where you can find the ride's gpx file – This is more of a guide than the definitive route since there are some detours due to various street changes and construction activities.
