Olympic threat to Eastway?

Postby Elliot M » Wed Dec 03, 2003 1:02 am

[quote]It?s obvious there is to be a major redevelopment of the whole Lower Lea Valley area and that Eastways is to be involved. The olympic bid is part of the plan, but it?s only a phase of what is a massive project to shake up the built and undeveloped parts of the area, plus a complete redesign of its transport infrastructure, roads in particular.

Whether you feel the redevelopment is a benefit to the area or not, whether you?re in favour of the olympic bid, it?s clear that Eastways remaining as it is now is not an option. Some may go as far as to say its whole existence is under threat....

It all looks a bit unclear doesn't it... there is some more discussion in the LCS forum but looks like there are different plans from different bodies...

My guess is that in 10 years' time they'll be building "yuppy hutches" on it like you see around the Millennium Dome now, for young fat cats working in the City.

Consultation meeting at Eastway Mon 15 Dec

Postby Elliot M » Sat Dec 13, 2003 6:40 pm

From John at Eastway:

You may have heard that Eastway is part of the Olympic 2012 bid.

Fluid the company who have been given the task to seek feedback for the
Olympic 2012 bid, are calling a consultation meeting at Eastway Cycle
Circuit on Monday December 15 at 6.30 for 7pm.

The meeting has been called at the request of cyclist's who had felt that
the Eastway Cycle Circuit had not been taken into account at the recent
consultation meetings.

The meeting is open to all and will be moderated, videotaped and recorded to
be included in Fluid's consultation report and which will be presented to
the Olympic bid consortium.

Fluid are the collectors of information and we urge you to see this as
opportunity to express your support for cycling at Eastway and your hopes
for the future. Fluid will not be taking the decisions and thus there will
be no point in slagging them off etc, but rather a chance to get the full
story told.

[quote]Dear Beastway rider

An open meeting will be held at Eastway on Friday January 23 at 6.30pm for a
7pm start. All are invited and we thank Lee Valley Park for the use of
Eastway, especially Dave who will be opening up for us.

The meeting is being hosted by representatives of Eastway users and they
will outline the situation at this time and the purpose of the meeting will
be to inform and get your feedback in preparation for the next step of
lobbying.

This is not an official Olympic bid meeting and you will be asked to agree a
mission statement and give sanction to an Eastway users group.

A draft of the mission statement is; ?To campaign for the new Eastway to
have improved facilities for all disciplines of cycle sport (including
infrastructure such as club and changing rooms, car parks, etc) without any
facilities being lost during the construction phases¹

It is also important to understand that many, many people feel that we want
to make a positive contribution to the future of Eastway & cycling in London
and it's surrounds. We intend the meeting to concentrate on how we can best
make an impact rather than spending the evening discussing 'what the 'Romans
did for us' (Life of Brian, Monty Python).

Please bear in mind that plans are very fluid

After the meeting your views and other information will be presented to the
Master Planners (HOK), the people who are drawing up the Olympic bid.

The Users group calling this meeting include representatives from British
Cycling HQ, British Cycling South East Region, British Cycling Eastern
region, Beastway MTB, TLi, LVRC, London Cyclo-Cross Assoc,. Cycle Speedway,
BMX, Team Darenth, Herne Hill Velodrome and interested dads/mums etc.

A report from a meeting held by this group recently will be made public
before the meeting as will further information.

Venue
Eastway (Lee Valley Cycle Circuit), Quarter Mile Lane, London E15 2EN.
