Drinking and Riding

Postby Marek » Fri Jan 23, 2004 9:52 pm

I read something quite recently that you can get pissed and still ride your bike and the cops can't do anything about it. I think they can get you on causing a hazard or something if you are all over the place, but else they have no powers. I suppose that is why most students ride bikes all over the place, makes sense.

Is that true?

Anyway on the same subject, how many days do you reckon it takes to recover from a full on session. I think it takes me over a week, but when I go for it I really go for it. I find that it knackers up my breathing for a couple of days. I wonder if alcohol has any cycling benefits, I know that some of the top riders have a couple of glasses of wine every now and then. Anyone know the truth on this important subject?

I know what you mean about the running home. I live on top of a big hill and the train station is at the bottom. The train station is one of those which taxi drivers don't seem to have heard of, so when I get lashed it means going up the big hill.

I have run up this hill many a time, but never sober. I have never timed myself but maybe I should do. Of course I think it is going to depend on what kind of do you have been to.

Before Xmas I did it in my dinner jacket and bow tie. A few people saw me and must have thought I was crazy.

I had no pain, although did get out of breath.

Maybe I should test different types of drinks and the effect on performance. Champagne one week and then beer the next and find out which one gives me the best hill climbing running time. I will post my findings in the future so you all know what to put in your water bottles. If anyone has any drink suggestions they would like me to test then let me know and I will see if I can fit them into my hard training sessions.

Cheers

ive ridden back from a mtb xc ride after one too many thimble fulls of stella, definitely slowed me down, legs felt like lead. but maybe the other reason i was slower was because i was giggling like a school girl and wobbling all over the track.
my advice, dont drink stella and ride. try wine.

I've ridden back from the pub after about 15 pints (following an XC race) and rode into a parked car, ending up with 9 stitches in my head, 12 Stone knocked 5 of his teeth out in the Lakes whilst hammered on beer and silly whisky, and Jonny fell off his road bike on the way back from Walkabout after an all day session, knocking his two front teeth out, so I wouldn't really recommend it

I recall once stopping at a pub halfway through a MTB ride in the Yorkshire dales and having five pints ot Theakston Old Peculiar, then throwing it back up at the top of the first climb of the afternoon.

I suppose if you're going to drink and ride then the ideal drink would be vodka and red bull - get you drunk and gives you wings for the ride home.
