IoW 2 day

Postby Rob » Sun Jan 18, 2004 6:22 pm

i know this doesnt belong here, but at least i know it'll get seen!

is the Isle of Wight 2 day happening in 2004, or is that still undecided?

what was last years like>? was it a a good race with an excellent field?

is there different races for category's, or is everyone together?

anyone planning on going this year?

Hi Rob,

Far, far too early in the year to know if it'll be happening. Last years format was for two events E/1/2 and 3/4/W. Both events consisted of two road stages and a hilly time trial to finish with. The first stage, Saturday, was 72 miles for 3/4/W with one serious hill that split the group on the first ascent and a few further short climbs. The second stage was 63 miles with two climbs and a few drags. Both of these finished up a short nasty climb that split the riders. The time trial was 8 miles over a rolling course with a climb at the end.
The E/1/2 event used the same course but was 103 and 79 miles for stages 1 and 2, won by the Life Repair team.
We had Brett, Brian, Ramon and myself in the 3/4/W and Tony in the E/1/2 events.
A good idea if it's run this year is to try and get a team together as it makes it much more rewarding and an opportunity to use team tactics.

To get a feel for it maybe try the Easter 3 Day?

Am planning the Sigma Sport Easter 3 Day. First day at Milland Hill has a nasty climb on the course, kicks towards the top! Second day at Goodwood, flat, final day at Walliswood, I think is rolling but will be hard after 2 days of racing. Expect race distance to be over 200 miles for the 3 days as it's open to 1/2/3 cat riders.

For those who haven't raced on the road, or interested to try, there are a couple of races prior to this, Alfold on 14th March and Dunsfold on 21st March, both rolling courses so good experience and 3/4/W/J cat. Unfortunately I won't be riding them as I'll be training in Spain http://www.users.globalnet.co.uk/~vulpes/pics.html

Maybe enough riders to have a team,

Happy training!

Rob, if you're going to ride the IoW 2 day may i suggest you do some serious hill training.
3 times up the dreaded Blackgang climb soon sorts the men from the boys!

Maybe you should organise a training trip down to IoW. You can get there do a lap and get back all in a day. Even by public transport!

I'd be happy to tag along with you, so long as you don't drop me on every climb

How's the training going anyway?

firstly, i heard bout the ice slide...lol, saounded very amusing!

as for the training, ive just got back of holiday a week and a half ago, and only a week ago have totally recovered from being ill, which lasted well over a month!(being ill meant no food, so i did drop down to 12 stone over crimbo....now im 12 and a quater, still lighter than before crimbo..so result there!)

anyway, shop business is pretty down, and no one wants lego for now, so im only on a 3 day week...

i travel to work giving me about 70 miles for teh three days, saturdays and sundays are between 50 and 100 miles, depending on weather and ofcourse how much sleep was gained the night before....but now, ive got two extra free days, which is cool! apart from the 2 hours in the morning when i have driving lessons, im pretty free!

so ill be doing two good rides around surrey or kent hills, most probably slow, but miles and hours on bike is more important than speed at the moment!

can anyone suggest anything? ive got a 21 % to train on if i can remember its exact location, but is there any other real killers around?

when racing season starts, ill be racing mondays and tuesdays, so then itll be easy rides in the day!

but anyway

i know i wont do great in sigma 3 day due to lack of experience and the likes of brett, dave K and gary Dodd, but i will put on the miles and train hard, and i will do good!

p.s, nice to hear from you brett, 2nd cat at the mo, but gimme 3/4 years, and ill be joining you up in teh elites(youll be there next year)

youll be old, ill be 22, and i really will be kicking your arse on those hills

NOT!

No worries Rob,
If you're looking for a mid-week ride, you know where to find us.
Still doing laps around Richmond Park rain, hail or shine. Apart from a minor run-in with a badger, everythings been going great.

The ice was quite a laugh. 5 of us fell but Dave K managed to stay upright and i'm sure he was laughing at us as we lay on the wet road. No major injuries as the next 90 miles were spent reminiscing. Did 100 with the new team on Sunday and got to meet all the 'big guns'

Hope you've fully recovered and i also hope to see you out and about soon.

I'll be there from 6.30pm until 9.00pm tonight.
Will be doing about 7 laps so I will need the company.

Tamar, Ramon and I will also be doing laps on Thursday night, so you're more than welcome to join. It'll be Ramon's first time on the bike since hitting a badger at 35mp/h and landing on his head!

Just found out my team may be doing the Nth Ireland 5 day/6 stage race at Easter, so no SL Easter 3 day for me. Gutted!

Dave, looks like you can have the honours of winning the 3 day.

No worries Dave, i'll email you, Tamar & Ramon tomorrow to organise.

You're right about the team easing it's way into the season!
Also racing out at Sand Down Park on Feb. 14th as a part of the SL promotional race for the Run, Tri, Bike show. It carries BCF points this year which is a bonus.

See you tomorrow night

Some advice Rob, don't go looking for that 21% climb just yet.
If you want to be a good climber you've gotta spin, spin and spin (RPM 100+)
Just because you're off the 'junior gears' now doesn't mean you should go crazy pushing big gears up hills. Stay out of that big chain ring and try and work on turning the cranks smoothly

You've already got the strength, now it's time to refine it to make you a better cyclist.

Keep training, see ya round
