RIDE tomorrow if anyone's interested

On road, off road, round in a big circle or down to the coast, we do the lot. We don't just do it at all speeds and for all levels, we do it Agreeably as well!

I'd be curious to hear what other people's habits are - on rides there are some I seem to never see eating, and others who always seem to be eating!

Depends on the intensity, duration & goal of the ride. Mainly just water for rides up to 2 1/2hrs, riding at sweetspot & below. Nutrition added for higher intensity and/or longer duration. If training it tends to be mainly "proper" food; dates, 1/2 bananas, decent unprocessed bars, etc. High intensity training and all racing on energy products; powder and/or gels.
Oh, and plenty of double espressos.

Other important considerations are the quality of the beans in the coffee shops you stop in, I personally prefer Illy.

You're wasting your time with this audience Marek. Don't forget this club bases its rides around the Pine Cafe. Not quite sure what beans they use? Heinz baked?

@Marek - sorry - I'm gonna fatigue myself and do a 5000m climbing 100 mile ride just for you!!!

heinz baked beans are quite good - you'll be gassing your way forward - bit like pressing the turbo charge button in those super cars - accelerator!

@ Andrew - what would your nutrition strategy be then exactly for a 100 mile bike ride - how often would you eat, how much would you drink and what would you consume? I'd be interested to know

Oh and one more thing - I feel bad but I hardly attend the CRs mainly because I sometimes get cold waiting around . I don't fancy starting a TG run as an icicle especially when the pace is fast from the outset! It takes my body ages to warm ups - I need at least 1 hour of warm up before the engine gets going. That's also why I don't do cafe stops in my ride. It disrupts my rhythmn

That's a shame - I'm a bit the same but there are ways around it. If it's a nice day like to do a little 40min warm up before the clubrun taking in the mountain peaks of Sanderstead and Caterham. If you plan it well enough you can arrive to CSS just a few minutes before departure (around 9.15 for first group). Also last week it was pretty cold so I did a extra loop solo on the dual carriageway plus a 12 min loop around Charlwood (was going to do a second one but as I went past the café people were getting ready to go, so it was perfect planning).

Why don't you try something like that this Saturday?

For a 6 hour ride I'd have 3 or 4 600ml bottles depending on the temperature starting with 2 with carb drink. I'd eat around 4 energy bars (CLIF generally) or similar (homemade flapjack to replace a bar or two) and eat regularly taking bites rather than eat a whole bar in one go every hour or so.

When racing a 100 I have 3 600ml bottles of carb drink (4 if hotter with the 2nd two mixed a bit weaker) and 5-6 gels and an energy bar. I'll have a small pot of rice pudding about an hour before the race and another just before I head off to the start line.

It's not a lot of food to take in over that prolonged period of exercise. During his record breaking 24 hour Wilko looked to take two feeds an hour, one being a bottle with SIS Go in it, the other being an energy bar (sometimes switched for a peanut butter sandwich).
